I have two Dosckstars and two Freeagent Go 320GB hard disks. We are posting sermon audio files from Go #1 on Dockstar #1 at our church, sharing the URLs in a table on our church web site. We are also using Active Copy to Go #2 on Dockstar #2 for backup. This works great, BUT backup and restore is a bit tricky.
Now I went to do a restore test using Active Copy. I deleted a sermon audio file from Go #1 on Dockstar #1 and then restore the file to Go #1 from Go #2 on Dockstar #2. However, the sharing URL is not restored.
Well, that isn't TOO surprising, since the .ceid files are different. So test some other variations using gparted to manipulate partitions and rsync for file copy:
- connect Go #1 and Go #2 to a Linux PC and clone the Go #1 partition with audio files to Go drive #2. When I insert Go #2 drive into Dockstar #1, the sermon URLs no longer resolve. When I go back to Go #1 drive on Dockstar #1, the URLs work again.
- connect Go #2 to Dockstar #1 and share some sermon audio files. Connect Go #2 and Go #1 to Linux PC and clone Go #2 audio file partition to Go #1. Delete audio file partition from Go #2 and then restore it from Go #1. Now the few test links shared when Go #2 was in Go #1 work again, though they are different. Restore Go #1 to Dockstar #1 and all the sermon file audio links work again.
So I am left with a couple of choices to have a true backup that can be restored on the Go drives to make the restore process more flexible (and transparent):
- ocasionally take the Go drives off their Dockstar and do an rsync backup copy from Go #1 to a partition on Go #2 set aside for recovery
- use bit.ly (or snurl or some other URL redirection) to create links that CAN be edited if necessary to restore files from one active copy directory to the sermon audio web site listings. This handles the situation where I can't physically get to the Dockstar at the church but the files must be updated one at a time, since you can't share a directory and append the filename from that directory.
Anyone else have some restore experiences on Dockstar (or Pogoplug) to share?
Best, Mark
