Hi mcf57, I think I can ease your concerns :)
First of all, you can use the Pogoplug Drive application to access your drive locally--it mounts the disk like any other disk on your computer.
Also, Cloud Engines has established a gameplan to take care of its customers in the (very unlikely) event of the company going away. They have an escrow account with SourceForge, and the code will be published there if that happens. More details here:

I am looking to possibly get a pogoplug device, but had a question concerning it. From what I can tell, files are accessed through the pogoplug website for outside your network and from any internet connection. Is this correct?
Is this also the method for accessing files locally over my own home network? Do things have to go through some sort of PogoPlug software and/or website for home retrieval?
I am basically concerned that if Pogoplug goes out of business, will I still be able to use this product and simply map the device or use software on a local PC to gain access to files over the Pogoplug.
In addition to what @Peter Redmer said, 3rd party software can be used to extend features not available by default.
Be sure to look at all the options: V2, Pro, GoFlex Net/Home etc before choosing.
