For the sake of argument, have you looked at http://www.plugapps.com ?

Not trying to rant/rave here but just sharing my experiences for others to learn from or share in misery.
I'm unfortunately, giving up on my Seagate FreeAgent Dockstat pogoplug unit. The concept of a cheap easy NAS Device is great with the internet sharing and all but I've had too many issues with
1) Speed. I worked with Pogoplug support for 3 weeks on this (who did a great job with support and attempting to fix my issue..), changed routers, ISP (not because of this testing...), HD units and even replaced the pogoplug unit itself but all along my transfer speed never topped 1.5mb/sec. USB is getting closer to 20mb/sec meaning the speed is less than 1/10 of USB. This isn't really acceptable for me and my purposes...
2) I needed this as a mapped network drive which it somewhat did, but i was constantly restarting and struggling with maintaining the drive letter.
3) In order to back up my USB drive I would need to unplug it (I use acronis trueimage which only detects 'physical' discs thus not able to backup the shared USB), and a replug in takes almost 2+ hours to be recognized.
Alone they aren't massive issues, but compared to the alternative of just getting a larger harddrive and sharing my PC (obviously not visible via the internet, but this wasn't an important feature for me) or plugging in my USB drive when needed, it wasn't worth the hasssle of 1-3.
This is probably a great product for some and others may not run into these issues or have the same needs as I, but for me unfortunately they ended up making it unusable. Hope this helps some who may be in my situation spare the couples months of tweaking and testing to avoid the hassle.
