I am using Pogoplug to access personal files anywhere I have internet access.
I am not using it for to access or share music and other media files.

Hence, my drives are set for
    Stream photos, etc : disabled
    Optimize video : never
    Create media metadata : never
    Generate thumbnail : never

Also, Active Copy is disabled.

However, everytime I start my Pogo web application, some scanning takes place.
Because my drive is 2T in capacity, this scanning will take a very long time.
I have to manually press the "Stop" on whatever current folder that Pogoplug
is trying to scan. Sometimes, there is no folder name, but the "Stop"
button indicates that scanning is active. The other indication is the
busy light on my HDD, even though I am not accessing any file on it.
After pressing the "Stop" button on all scanned files, it takes a while to disengage, then
Pogoplug honors my settings and my drive is quiescent.

I think that Pogodrive software should check these settings before starting
a scan. Somehow it is ignoring the settings on startup.

There is a related posting titled 'Pogoplug "scans" folders even when
Active Copy and Media Settings are turned OFF" on 06/20/2010. This appears to be
fixed because there is now a "Stop" button to manually address this.

Hello,

The Scanning Media job will always happen on start-up, that cannot be disabled. This is because when it starts up, it doesn't know if the drive was removed from the Pogoplug, contents altered, then put back on the Pogoplug while it was off. Note that if the scan was allowed to complete, a full index of the files will be created and subsequent scans will complete sooner as it quickly goes through everything and notices no changes.

Thanks,

Hi libtoks.so,

Thank you for your reply.

Based on your answer, please confirm my understanding:

1) The 4 drive options are used to control what happens
during scanning, but not whether the scanning process is started.

2) The scanning process is required to ensure that the file index is up to
date.

3) There is a manual option to stop the scanning but Pogoplug always
wants to index the drive for media files.

1) True

2) True

3) Not only for media files, _all_ files and folders must be indexed.

Thanks,

Thanks this answers my question as well. I think this should be made clear somewhere in the setup so people don't panic and have an expectation of this occurring as well as the time it might take.

It would be a nice addition to have some indexing rules that let users decide what gets indexed for my.pogoplug.com and what is available only on the LAN.

For example, any directory starting with Exclamation mark (!) or some flag character(s) would be skipped by the uploading of file names to pogoplug.com, if indeed this is how it works.

One thing I find missing from the details is this: Where does the device/directory/filename data exist? On Pogoplug.com? Is it stored somewhere, or accessed "on demand" ??

There is a question about security that has not really been answered anywhere except in general "don't worry" terms, but I haven't seen anything explaining in detail where the information is stored once I plug in a drive to a pogoplug device.

Yes, I would like to second the request to NOT index some things. Kinda like a robots.txt file. Some of my files change quickly and dramatically, and I don't need indexing on them.

Everything is stored on drive(s) attached to your Pogoplug or on your computer if you are using the software.

The index, thumbnails, converted videos, etc are all saved on your own storage.

If all ist stored on the drive, how do you deal with eventually missing space? How big will be the index file for a 2 TB disk with approximately 2 million entries?
Transcoding movies would require twice the space on the drive. How do you deal with that?
Obviously the pogoplug is a VERY slow computer. Its indexing for several days, maybe months (personal impression, as I never ever have seen it finishing). Wouldn't it be easier to prepare the drive on a fast machine, like my macbook?
Will the drive go to sleep after the index is done? (I only want it to suck power if I need access). I can't answer the last question, as till now it didn't stop indexing yet...

Duplicate sorry... Don't know how to delete

I'm getting a bit fed up now. Everything set up for disabled, never etc. and to say access is hit and miss is an understatement!

It took 3 months of messing to get the initial index sorted before I could see files remotely and through the pogoplug drive on the pc.

Gone again now. Ejected the disc, checked for errors, reattached and now it's scanning, scanning, scanning. Eventually it gets fed up of scanning and tells me the drive is not available.

Not my best purchase!

My Plug has finished scanning and works more or less as advertised. The HD switches off, which is important. I just wonder, what the meta data is used for, and why, if I choose a mp3 file to play in my android, it does not read the existing meta data. I would like to have instead of scan "as quickly as possible", a "scan by use"...

I guess I have to organize my data differently on different disks...
