After searching the forums here I've found several similar setups to what I am trying to achieve, but not the same thing.

To keep it simple I'm wondering if there's a way that I can be the only computer on my network to access my device (seagate freeagent on a dockstar), even if my device is plugged into the router (it's actually plugged into an ethernet switch then into the router).

I'm hoping to keep my files private on the network, but still have access to them over the internet when I'm away from home.

Ideas?

Hello,

I'm pretty sure what you're asking is default behavior of the Pogoplug already.

Assuming you have UPnP and PublicSharing disabled, what do you see the Pogoplug doing that makes you feel your files are accessible by anyone other than yourself at home or at work?

The only limit to the Pogoplug is your imagination... and C skills... and linux skills. ^_^ h\t\tp://download.pogoplug.com/opensource/pogoplug-gcc.tar.bz2

When I plug in my drive to the network, anyone who is connected to the network can map it as a network drive and then has access to all my files.

Oh, I see.

Have you considered using the DriveApp?

I'll give that a try. I'm assuming there are more options for securing your data on the network?

I tried out the DriveApp, but it doesn't really address my issue. I even changed my drive to a different workgroup (hoping it wouldn't be discoverable on the network) but it still was accessible by all.

Is there another way (or setting) that I should be trying to limit access?

Hello,

If you disable WFS/SAMBA and use the DriveApp, your files would only be accessible to you and nobody else.

I was hoping there was a way to do this without extra software, but this still works.

Thanks
