Uploads for the Pogoplug Biz Administrator are blazingly fast. However, uploads for regular users are VERY slow - basically unusable.

Reason: Admin uploads use the local LAN to transfer files to the device, user uploads are routed over the Internet through the Pogoplug site.

If you are using Pogoplug Biz please submit this problem to Support and request a fix.

Upon discussion with others in the office, my original reply doesn't address the issue you're seeing.

We're aware of this and hope to correct it in the future.

Thanks,

The only limit to the Pogoplug is your imagination... and C skills... and linux skills. ^_^ h\t\tp://download.pogoplug.com/opensource/pogoplug-gcc.tar.bz2

I would think that this would be a major issue for business users.

Perhaps it is expected that clients will download more than upload but still, this would certainly not help a business' image when working with their clients.

Dieter, just how slow is it? From what you've said it sounds like it'll be slower than uploading to an FTP because it has to go through the Pogoplug site.

In our case the user based upload was basically unusable. It got slower and slower during an upload. The same upload for the administrator took only seconds.

No complaints about downloads. They works as expected.

If the upload speed for regular users gets improved, this is a great device!

Same problem here. I assume it's a setting or something? Really- uploading a 1MB file takes nearly two minutes with a ~5Mbps upload speed.

Admin has super-fast uploading using the Pogoplug app on Mac.

Is there a fix for this? We basically can't use it in our office as-is.

The only solution right now is to let users use the admin account for uploads. Only Admin uploads use the LAN. All user uploads however are routed over the Internet.

Tech Support told me they reported this issue to development and it might get solved in the future.

Actually if you know how to administer a Linux system and security it is easy:

If you also just want to add samba or afp capabilities consider Optware:

This is a major issue. This is practically the only feature that makes the pogoplug biz worth it - and it doesnt work. I cannot believe that the company would let a product like this out the door. Is there a date we can expect to have a fix for this? If not, I will be returning this product and never buying from Cloud Engines again.

I have the same problem.

I just bought the BIZ version, and my admin account is working great. But when i have given out accounts to my emploeeys, its CREEPY slow.. And unstable!

Anyone heard anything regarding this ?

Same here. The PPBiz is nice and fast for the admin user, but so horrifically slow for normal users that we just can't use it.

I hope that the company behind pogoplug is "fixing" the pogoplug biz shortly. I was planing to give out access to yeasterday, test it today and send out the invitation tomorrow. But now its not worth it. :(

Because it sucks so incredible hard, noone els them me(because i already got a pogoplug BIZ) will buy a pogoplug product. So because my admin account is actualy working very well, i will not give out "not working" access to my pogoplug BIZ. This only because i'm so "nice" and belive in the pogoplug product. But i REALY could use an upgrade now tho!!

We bought the Pogoplug Biz device to serve as a NAS for our church office. The multi-user feature seemed like a great way to control which users had access to shared folders, and the remote access features were a definite plus! But when we realized that only the admin user could access the device locally it made the device completely unusable for our purposes. Even users on the same network as the pogoplug could not achieve upload speeds faster than 60kBs. The admin user has amazingly fast speed but if none of the other users can achieve this, this device will not work for our office staff.

The suggested workaround is to have everyone log in as the admin user, this option is not only undesirable but crippling because it would allow users to access sensitive financial information. Does anyone know if Cloud Engines has plans to fix this bug with Pogoplug Biz users? Is it even on the roadmap? If so, what is the expected timeline? It's a shame this doesn't work, a comparable device can cost more than $700.

My BIZ is supposed to arrive tomorrow... this looks like a show stopper; when will this be fixed? or do I just send it back?

Hi. FWIW, I've been in touch with support on this issue for a few weeks. The developers are aware of the problem, but can't give any estimate of when it will be fixed. It seems as though something in the "Biz" feature set breaks the uploads for any account other than the admin account. Be aware that some users on the forum have suggested de-registering and re-registering the device as a fix. DON'T DO THIS as it will remove the "Biz" features (this is also a known bug) and the device will only function as an ordinary Pogoplug (support have to re-enable the Biz features for you). I have an open support ticket for this issue, so if I get an estimated fix date, I'll post it here.

I just received this update from Pogoplug support:

Thank you for contacting Pogoplug Support. By design, Pogoplug sub-accounts are treated as virtual users despite the fact that you have linked them to a physical drive on your physical Pogoplug. Consequently, all data transfers are routed through our service, which results in slower transfer speeds. These speeds are similar to what you would experience if accessing your Pogoplug remotely. I apologize for any inconvenience.

We have already logged a feature request to change this behavior and the CTO is aware of it but I don't anticipate this will change this first half of this year.

Seems like they might fix this in the distant future. But we can't afford to wait that long.

February 16, 2011 8:47 AM

I just upgraded to the pogoplug biz and both Admin and user accounts are slow. I just switch from a Seagate device that uses the pogoplug services and experienced much faster speeds local and remotely. I upgraded for the features that the Biz had and the fact that the hardware was not third party I figured that speeds were going to be faster if not equal. I starting to feel me switching was a bad move. If they don't fix this soon my Pogoplug biz will go on ebay and I will purchase something from one of their competitors.

February 16, 2011 2:37 PM

My users are also discovering this too. And I'm getting many ugly emails because of this.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a product that has the capabilities that Pogoplug has in 1 package so I'm hoping Pogoplug finds a fix for this soon before I am out of a job.

My personal edition from my PC uploads fine and fast.
My personal edition from my MAC uploads at like 5 BYTES per second.

VERY FRUSTRATING.
Tell the owner of pogoplug.

June 10, 2011 8:23 AM

Nearly 6 months since the first message, and nothing changed.

Logging in through the web site gives full LAN speed. Using the Linux client uses the Internet connection (512 Kbit...) for uploads.

This completely sucks. I need to rsync files to the pogoplug and can't do it using the web interface. I am forced to use the admin account and can't give limited accounts to my coworkers/users, as they would clobber the Internet connection and slow down the entire office.

Please correct this ASAP.

Three more months have passed, and no response.

Totally wasted money.

You seem more interested in music and video streaming than in business customers.
I think I will suggest to all my friends to NOT buy your products.

Goodbye.

Hi Alex_PK,

This is Christopher, head of Customer Outreach here at Cloud Engines.

I am sincerely sorry to hear Pogoplug Business isn't working for you. We realize while the sub-user feature is a great value proposition, performance is not as you may have expected.

We stand by our products and want to make all Pogoplug users happy. Please PM me so we can discuss this further.

Christopher, don't know how to PM you but I'd also like the fix for this

September 2, 2011 5:22 AM

Hi Chris. I can't PM you either and I'm also interested in a fix. I've hovered over the icon and the "send PM" option isn't there.

September 2, 2011 1:22 PM

Hi all,

I'm looking into why no one can PM me.

Thanks for your patience.

I've had my Pogo Biz since Christmas 2010 and found the exact same issue. I've been waiting for a fix as well. When I emailed customer service, I got the sense that the CE representative just wanted me to stop contacting them. One even suggested I return it, and another response simply said they were sorry I didn't return it in the first 30 days. *sigh*
