Hi, This may be of some help to other users who are tying to access large number of files.
I have a collection of 30,000 + files (between 3 and 4 gigs). The files are primarily html and pdf . They are linked together through an elaborate menu system; the files are more or less useless to me without that menu system.
Since purchasing my Pogoplug Pro a couple of months ago, I have been trying to use the plug as a web server. The "direct" approach, using Unix commands, proved daunting for a nonprogrammer like me.
Here is what I did to solve the problem (assuming you have already installed and are using Pogoplug Pro:
1. Set a fixed drive letter for my Pogo. The instructions are set forth in the Pogoplug site and are quick and easy to follow. You will need to set such a drive letter because the Opera Unite apps in question require a specific drive and folder to access.
2. Download the current version of the free Opera browser. Enroll in Opera Unite and download the webserver application and the webproxy application (Also free)
3. Download a free version of the Apache webserver software and install it. I believe the instructions require some type of webserver software. See Opera for instructions.
4. Follow the directions from Opera about establishing a webserver. In following those directions, set your Pogoplug drive and folder where you keep your html etc. files.
5. I believe you have to run apache webserver before firing up the Opera Unite applications. Incidentally, you may not need to use both of the Opera Unite apps noted. The webserver app, properly configured, should work just fine.
6. Make sure that the computer you are running the Opera browser on is set to be on and will not shut down automatically or go to sleep or hibernate (unless, of course, this is what you want!). The Opera browser and the Opera Unite app must be running on your computer at all times. No Opera, no web server.
7. The Opera Unite App, once started, should give you the http address. You will need a home file (e.g. "index.htm" or menu.htm or the like.). Use that at the end of the url address (This is like just about every web page you have ever accessed).
8. Fire up any browser (not necessarily an Opera browser) on another computer, IPad or smartphone which has Internet access. You should be able to access the designated Pogoplug folder and file(s) within as a de facto web page.
9. The amazing thing is that this takes minutes to set up without all of the LifeHacker programming stuff, requires no tinkering with firewalls or port forwarding.
10. The Opera setup and Operate Unite app setup instructions are pretty clear. You can also make the contents of the folder indexable by Google etc or not. This is spelled out by the Opera Unite docs.
Let me know if this works for you.
Best, Phil
