I just got the PogoPlug Pro today, and after spending 3 hours with it, i want to smash this p.o.s. with a big hammer.

Ok, so I started the PogoPlug Pro up real happy with my new perchace and plugged in a WD My Book Essential drive (NTFS).

It started up but kept saying it was Scanning, and it could be slow. So I found, and turned off, all media setup options under "Media Settings". I pressed stop scan, and went back to the front page. All my dir's where there but after clicking on a couple i found they where all EMPTY.

I safely unplugged the drive and plugged into my Windows 7 and it complaind of filesystem errors right off the bat. Yikes.

I tryed to Plug it back in and it started f'in scanning right away again, with all the media settings still off.

Ok, getting real tired of this and getting more and more afraid of loosing data i plugged in a 2gb USB Thumbdrive with few files and no movies og music on.

Now after about 40 minutes it's still Scanning and warning me all other the place that everying is slow because of it.. and let me tell you it's really slow.

While waiting i tryed connecting via UNC to the Pogo, and no matter what i tryed it refused connection! NICE! :-/

So 3 hours into this adventure I'm already sick and tired of this box.

Someone please help me and tell me what the heck I'm doing wrong here and why it's all my fault. :)

Ok, so after waiting for another 20 mins I safely unplug the USB thumbdrive, reboots the pogoplug, inserts the thumbdrive again..... and back to SCANNING! seriously? why the heck is it scanning? All options under media is turned off!!

Another issue. The web interface is slow (maybe because it scanning), but it's annoying. It's completely bonkers you have to ?change page? = more waiting, if you have a lot of files in one folder. How the heck do i bypass this web junk when I'm locally and just use a UNC to my drive? I'd rather NOT have to have install extra software on my mediacenter PC for example, with UNC path works great and have been for 10+ years.

Guess it's back to scanning ..

Hi Pede - it sounds like you have tried several things to get your drive to attach and scan properly.

Pogoplug, first of all, takes these kinds of issues very seriously, and I would recommend contacting their official support for assistance at this point. You can also try running a disk check on the USB attached drive.

Thanks Peter.

Is a shame the PogoPlug software is pure TRASH.

Hopefully they will get their act together, but until them, OpenPogo turned out to be good for basic stuff like local network filesharing that the PogoPlug does so incredibly aweful.

I'm still amazed that PogoPlug does not support basic windows file sharing and required slow and inflexible HTTP transfers thru extra software clients for access of all files locally. What the heck are they thinking?

Hello,

While the Pogoplug works for the majority of our users, we aim to constantly improve the product for those who might not understand how the Pogoplug works or may want additional features.

Preventing the scanning job from finishing is why you see empty directories. The scanning job is for the Pogoplug to gather the names, dates and filesizes of all your files into an sqlite database on the drive. This usually allows faster access to your files, instead of having to wake-up and/or wait for a USB-drive's filesystem I/O. Also, just like DropBox, you must install software on your computer if you do not favor the WebUI. Most of our users enjoy this experience.

The HTTP protocol is a time-tested specification proven to move data across the internet since its inception. I would not call it slow and inflexible. However, we understand that there will always be costumers who would like to do things in ways that are more familiar to them. This is why the Pogoplug is open and you can install things like OpenPogo.

We hope that using OpenPogo satisfies your needs.

Thanks,

The only limit to the Pogoplug is your imagination... and C skills... and linux skills. ^_^ h\t\tp://download.pogoplug.com/opensource/pogoplug-gcc.tar.bz2

Hi libtoks.so,

Thanks for filling me in on how the scanning works. It still does not explain why it took close to 1½ hours to scan a 2gb USB thumb drive with less than 150 non music or movie files on it. And why it kept scanning after I turned everything under Media Settings off for all 4 drives i tried to plug in. It kept scanning on re-insert no matter what i tried, but I guess it needs to fill/check with the database on every insert?

"The scanning job is for the Pogoplug to gather the names, dates and filesizes of all your files into an sqlite database on the drive. This usually allows faster access to your files, instead of having to wake-up and/or wait for a USB-drive's filesystem I/O."

If the sqlite database is on the same drive as the files, how does that get around wake-up of the USB-drive? I don't quite get that, or are you talking about an other drive?

"The HTTP protocol is a time-tested specification proven to move data across the internet since its inception. I would not call it slow and inflexible."

You have to agree with me that it's pretty nuts to use HTTP protocl transfers if 98% of your data trafic is over local ethernet. Having to install extra software even makes it unusable for some applications, as I can see other users complain about on the forums.

I really hope you guys come to your senses and build a Samba share like option into the PogoPlug package (as you did with the DockStar as i undestand it?), as i feel you are crippeling the PogoPlug in a totally unnessasary way.
Why limit yourself to be a dropbox alternative, when you can be a NAS alternative as well? Without WFS/UNC Path mounting the PogoPlug is NOT a credible NAS alternative.

Thanks, and I'm looking forward to your reply, ;)

I attached a USB drive preloaded with 220,000 files. HTML, JPG, SWF, XML files.

Over 24 hours later it was finally done "scanning". I had to unplug the drive and plug it back in. Guess what it's doing now?

I have all media creating/whatever turned off.

My partner tried to upload 70 MB of files. 2+ hours was the "calculated time". Now we're both on 10M up/2M down connections. What a joke.

I tried deleting 2 folders with about 1600 files. 3+ hours later it hosed my router & broadband modem. Had to power down the Pogoplug & drive to gain control of my network. All the time the attached hard drive cranking away with a solid red light on the front.

I contacted tech support. Their recommendation? Disconnect the drive, connect to another computer, delete the files, reconnect to the pogoplug.

You gotta be fricking kidding me. What's the purpose of a "cloud" storage system if you have to remove it from the cloud to do any "large" file uploads or downloads. Oh yeah, it then goes back into it's scanning mode for hours and hours when you reconnect.

The pogoplug firmware, including the pro, does not include SMB/CIFS file sharing etc.

While the community at PlugApps.com has not yet come to the full setup the the Pink/V2 enjoys, we do have a working chroot method that will nicely provide you with the UNC you are looking for via Samba.

You can even leave the pogoplug services running if you so choose.

Thanks for the info, but the UNC connection doesn't work for my partner 1200 miles away and my family scattered around the midwest. I can just as easily connect my external drive to one of my Linux or Windows computers and internally share it if that's what I need.

But, the folks at PogoPlug finally relented and are sending me a new unit to replace this defective one.

Ah, my apologies on misunderstanding the need!

Either way, if you ever need any assistance, don't hesitate to contact the PlugApps community.

Am I correct in my understanding of your comment, that PlugApps can be installed without disrupting the Pogoplug's original firmware? Retaining access to my.pogoplug.com and use of DriveApp?

Plugbox linux (PlugApps) can be installed in a chroot, leaving the original system intact save for some minor modifications to the /etc/init.d/rcS script.

I personally run one modified Pro with my.pogoplug.com disabled, a serial console and an eSATA port, and one Pro with just the chroot installed.

It also works on android phones. Shows you how versatile it is. Great way to add Linux services. Since the Pro has 128MB vs the V2's 256MB, the external sata is useful for swap space also.

@Pede, this is correct. The options in Media Settings are for disabling transcode, thumbnail generation, and metadata generation. Those are all separate from the media scanning, which is always turned on when a drive is connected, but can be stopped by clicking stop if should you desire (it sounds ilke you have been doing that). Without scanning your media, no movies will show up in the movies filter, no music will show up in the music filter, etc.

Yeah, very disappointed in pogoplug, I'm using the seagate dockstar, big promise nothing but frustration, does not work with Windows 7 x64 version (states it's not on the network) yet my.pogoplug.com works)
New version exposes your computer to net, not good, so I tried an older version, which for some stupid reason they pulled off their site, I found an old version 2.5.5 it kinda works but the transfer rate is like dial-up modem speed.
Hours wasted on this P.O.S.
