Do you already have a Pogoplug? If so you can plug-in your wireless adapter and find out. It won't hurt anything to try it and you won't break anything in doing so.

Is there anybody know which USB wifi adapter (from other company) can be used on Pogoplug? Due to the restriction of the law, we are not allowed to use wifi adapter I purchased in other countries.

Tried a couple off non-pogoplug wireless USB adapters but non of them worked.

Now have a pogoplug one via the free wireless USB adapter, it is larger than the other adapters I have, but works OK.

Agree that the shipping cost, way too much for this product, it just came in a plastic bag with a guide for ?10.00 via UPS, where normal mail carriers would charge a lot less.

I use AZIO Wireless USB Adapter - AWU101N. It works like a charm.

Both of my MonoPrice Wireless N and Wireless G USB adapters work.

My Keebox W150NU does not work.

Hi Kumpol,

What are the model# of the MonoPrice you were using.

Hi Kumpol,

Thanks for your input. This is a great news! It must be great to hear that there is at least another choice for pogoplug wifi connection.

The problem is that whether I can find them in my country (Japan).

@JohnB_UK and @ka,

From what I've been able to figure out (but haven't tested) any USB adapter with the 3070 Ralink chipset would work. Kumpol's AZIO Wireless USB Adapter - AWU101N adapter has the 3070 chipset according to the AZIO site: http://www.aziocorp.com/product/wireless/wirelessadapter/awu101n.htm as does the Wireless N Monoprice adapter. (The wireless G adapter has the 2070 chipset).

Futhermore, the information provided on the PogoPlug Pro hardware seems to support this as the internal wifi card also sports a Ralink Chipset (3090). http://www.plugapps.com/index.php5/Hardware:_Pogoplug_Pro

I'm willing to bet that the 3071 and 3072 chipsets are also supported but I can't be certain.

I've seen these on eBay for as low as about $4.00 CAD.

I have what I believe to be a suitable usb adapter, but do not have the "Wireless" option on the my.pogoplug.com website, in order to configure it. Would someone, who has used a 3rd party usb wireless adapter please explain the steps that they took to make it work?

Do I need to manually ( ssh into the device ) enable the wifi driver in order to see this option on the website? Do I need to manually configure this on the POGO device?

I am using the POGO-B01 ( Version 3 ) and a Buffalo WLI-UC-GNM usb adapter.

According to this web site ( http://www.wikidevi.com/wiki/Buffalo_WLI-UC-GNM ), it uses the RT2870STA driver, which I believe is already installed onto my POGOPLUG.

Thank you in advance :)

If the software and driver is installed on the Pogoplug when it boots it loads the driver and then the website knows you have it plugged in and working. Does it even light up when you boot up the Pogoplug?

What you are going to have to do first, is ssh into your poogoplug and check for the software and the setup to load it on boot.

When I have the POGO connected to the router, with the USB wifi adapter in place, the POGO boots up, and then goes solid green. On my USB wifi adapter, I really don't see any lights, because it is so tiny. It's a micro USB adapter.

I did SSH into the POGO and found this ( /etc/Wireless/RT2870STA ), which I think  means that the software is installed. I am new to UNIX, so I am unsure of how to "load" the driver.

I think that I agree with you, that the driver needs to load, and the POGO "see" the USB wifi adapter, and then on my.pogoplug.com, I will see the Wireless option active.

Can anyone tell me what UNIX command to type in, in order to activate, or load, the driver while SSH'd into the POGO?

Do I need a different driver?

I just ordered the 5333.  We'll see what happens.

@POGOB01V3_DEC2011
ssh in, and use `lsmod`. If that doesn't show, `modprobe rt2870sta`

Thank you WarheadsSE.

I first had to invoke "which lsmod" in order to use it. The results are as follows:

# which lsmod
/sbin # /sbin/lsmod
xce 24220 0 - Live 0xbf1a7000
rt3070sta 691568 0 - Live 0xbf0f9000
ufsd 504048 0 - Live 0xbf078000 (P)
vfat 12324 0 - Live 0xbf06f000
fat 55812 1 vfat, Live 0xbf05c000
usb_storage 51528 0 - Live 0xbf04a000
ehci_hcd 35368 0 - Live 0xbf03c000
usbcore 142256 4 rt3070sta,usb_storage,ehci_hcd, Live 0xbf014000
gmac 41272 0 - Live 0xbf004000
mii 6176 1 gmac, Live 0xbf000000

It looks as if the rt3070sta driver is loading. It loads with, or without the usb wifi dongle attached. One thing ( of many ) that confuses me is that I don't see this driver in /etc/Wireless???

ls /etc/Wireless/RT2870STA

I got this when I use modprobe:

# /sbin/modprobe rt2870sta
modprobe: module 'rt2870sta' not found

I did look at the dongle, and it is glowing solid blue, once the POGO boots up.

Unfortunately, there is still no wireless option for me on the my.pogoplug.com website. What am I missing?

Just for info, this is what I get for lsusb:

/sbin # /sbin/lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05e3:0608
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0411:01a2

Reconciling, I found this - USB: 0411:01A2 BUFFALO INC. (formerly MelCo., Inc.) WLI-UC-GNM Wireless LAN Adapter

Not working for CE, the initial thing that I see may be one of many things: they could be detecting the exact vendor ID and discerning based on that.

Otherwise, you may need to find out if that runs on the same chipset, and thus takes the same firmware.

Happy Happy Joy. The Monoprice 5333 http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=105&cp_id=10501&cs_id=1050... worked like a charm for me.

Thanks for the info!

Try this link, and sort by 3070 chipset. It returns many choices that *should* work out of the box.

http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/rt2800usb/devices

As a cross reference, it confirms above posts, that the Azio AWU101N, and Zonet ZEW2545 ( http://openpogo.tumblr.com/ ) are supported :)

I also found this page:

http://wiki.debian.org/rt2870sta#supported

Here is a line of code that I found, to activate the wireless manually:

# /sbin/udhcpc -i ra0 -R -b -p /var/udhcpc_ra0.pid

I have not been able to confirm this yet, as my usb wifi adapter ( WLI-UC-GNM ) is not registering. Thus no ra0 to initiate...

I believe they are checking the exact vendor and usb ID: (0x148f:0x3070)
Try to find a Stick with these and it will work. Bad news: these infos are often not accurate, because of newer hardware versions. I tried the TP-Link TL-WN727N and it did NOT work (most probably only V1 hardware of this stick works). But i did not give up and found the Logilink WL0049A v3.0 (0x148f:0x3070). Works like a charm out of the box. If you are from Germany, you can order it through ATELCO for 7 EUR.
