Hi,

I thought I would share my "breakthrough" yesterday with the community.

I have on my home and office computers a 30,000 + collection of html and pdf files held together and made accessible by a multi-page menu system full of alphabetical links to those files.  Without the menu system, my collection is just, well, 30,000 files--impossible to manuever around and extraordinarily difficult to access especially when I need some specific information pronto.  I back up all of these files daily on to a network server at work and on to two external usb hard drives in two other locations.  Then, others in my office in effect download the newer files to their computers.  To the extent that everybody I work with needs these files, backup was not an issue; there were plenty of computers to which all of these files were copied.

The problem:  What if I am away from home or the office and need to access these files using the same carefully designed menu system?  Well, possible solutions included using remote access software (e.g. PC Anywhere), backing up to a cloud webserver, keeping the file collection on a multi gigabyte USB thumbnail/pocket drive.

But....I wanted to use a Pogoplug.

First, I tried using the Pogoplug web interface from my web browser.  This was a disaster: horribly slow, clunky, html links did not work, ....

Here is how I solved the problem:

1.   Using the instructions at the Pogoplug site, I made the gigantic external hard drive I have attached (by USB) to the Pogoplug. I called that drive "P" (without the quotes). You must fix the linked device drive letter.

2.  Then, after making sure I was logged into Pogoplug via the web, I opened a web browser (Chrome and Firefox work nicely), and typed in the address bar: file:///P:/Maxtor/medmal/mainframe.htm   [Maxtor is my external hard drive--you can rename the drive if it has a long name--see instructions also on Pogoplug site' "medmal" is my folder holding all of the  30,000+ files, including my html menu  system; and "mainframe" is the main menu system, which links to everything.)

Boom!  Everything works flawlessly.  It is VERY fast. What a wonderful change from the Pogoplug web interface!! As long as I am logged in to Pogoplug, I can see and easily access my menu system and files.  I bookmarked and added the above site to my browser address bars; I created a shortcut from the desktop.  I saved the link to a gmail email I sent myself, so I can always find it.  You could and probably should also save the info on a usb thumb drive for similar easy retrieval.

My "little" intranet is now (sort of) an extranet.

I AM very happy.

Caution:  All of the computers run versions of Windows--Vista and 7.  I have no idea how this would work on a Mac or Linux machine. I do not have an IPAD and can't comment on that either.

Now, I have an Android phone.  The damn thing will not let me easily access local files.  I want my menu system available everywhere I take my phone. I have tried PAW and I-Jetty web servers on the phone. They don't work.

Any way to use Pogoplug? Please help.
Thanks==Phil

It would be the same thing on a Mac or Linux machine. I have all 3 platforms and I do something similiar to what you're describing...as long as the Pogoplug app is running, you can do what you've described in all 3 :-)

That's great--now, please, I beg of you, tell me how to set up the same thing on my Android smartphone (Droid X). I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks
Phil
