I'm a brand new user, having just bought a Pogoplug for $40 on a Black Friday whim.

Set the thing up per instructions, attached a working, powered-up USB hard drive.  but here's what I see on my.pogoplug.com:

"Your pogoplug enabled device does not have a hard drive attached"

No idea where to turn from here.

Update: the desktop app briefly displayed the drive's folder structure; but when I clicked on any folder, I got an hourglass and it froze. I had to finally use Task Manager to exit. Still haven't actually access the drive.

Hi Fis,

There are some basic troubleshooting steps you can try before contacting official Pogoplug support. Disconnect the drive from the Pogoplug and reattach it to your computer.

Then, run whatever disk check utility you have access to depending on your OS - on Mac for example, you can run Disk Utility.

The reason for this is that sometimes disks have errors or corruption that prevent the Pogoplug from working properly or that it can't automatically correct.

After you do that, reboot the Pogoplug, then reattach the drive.

This often fixes problems with mounting disks, but if it does not, contact Pogoplug support (support@pogoplug.com)

Thanks. This worked. Now I need to figure out this blinding interface. Was hoping for something that just looked more like Windows!

I'm having the same trouble here... I've never used Disk Utility though, what do I do once its running?

Thankfully, it's pretty easy.  Click on the drive you want to repair in the left column, then you can repair permissions as well as select the "repair disk" option.  I'd recommend both.

Will this remove anything from my Hard Drive? I've 1TB worth of stuff on there and I don't want to risk losing anything.

December 16, 2010 5:12 PM

Well, technically it shouldn't, but if you have an unknown problem that hasn't been diagnosed yet, I'm not sure what would happen to the corrupted files - the repair function may try to fix them and possibly fail.

To be honest, I've been a daily Mac user since about 2000 for work and personal use, and have never once had a problem with Disk Utility in any way, through 2 laptops and a desktop machine plus several external drives.

If anything, it will fix a lot of things - a permissions check should be run on a regular basis to keep your Mac running smoothly anyway. I only run a disk repair if there is an obvious problem.

The bottom line - there are never any guarantees, but these utilities are designed to fix problems, not to cause them or inadvertently remove data :)

Oh, and I have to say it - you should always have a backup of your stuff in situations like this, that way you won't have to worry. I try my best to double backup important things if possible.

I've only just got round to doing this, clicked 'repair disk' and had no trouble but 'repair disk permissions' is unclickable (greyed out) any reason why this would be?

In the history it says "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required." Not sure if that means anything?

It's a 2TB Lacie - I'm wondering if there's compatibility issues?

Same problem here. I've ran the utility. I've even formatted and reloaded all my music and photos. Power cycled. Attached. It still doesn't see the hard drive attached.

May 23, 2011 3:53 PM

I've been using Pogoplug since it first came out, the original pink unit with just one USB slot. Still using one of two drives that have never had trouble being seen as attached. But sometime in the last week I tried to access this 500GB drive, and it reports the message described in this thread as to "not having a drive attached."
I have made no physical changes, no software changes myself, (don't know if Pogoplug did any automatic updates recently--they used to need user input first and were not automatic.)
The last time I 'visited' my pogoplug drive I had no trouble. That was shortly after the new web interface came online, but I almost never use that. Instead I use the drive letter software in Windows, and the Pogoplug app on iPad and iPod Touch.

Just want to get it on the record this problem cropped up in my case as well as other folks' whose comments or new threads appear scattered around this forum. Why aren't nearly identical issues with hard drive attachment bumped together at this forum? Duplication of threads and slower-to-read trends with issues result.

Meanwhile I'll unmount and do disk check etc, etc; but I think there's a Pogoplug ghost in the machine, not a bunch of faulty or otherwise unrelated corruption of drives in the community.
Feels like a bug to me.

I agree its a bug. This problem is happening to me also and its with whatever HD I try to use (so not related to a specific brand). Only seems to have happened sinc PP 'upgraded' its software. Basically, what was a useful piece of kit has now turned into a useless pink box. Interestingly, the things they tell you to try out to fix it BEFORE you call tech support are the SAME things they tell you to do when you CALL tech support! Arrrgh! My 'advisor' has obviously run out of ideas as he has not stopped replying to my emails.

In addition, I stupidly paid for the premium account so I could stream from all my computers (as it is supposed to); but as soon as I try to put the activiation code into more than 1 x PC, it wont allow it, reducing me to using only ONE computer for streaming - I want my money back!!!

Pogoplug:
I respectfully and helpfully want to suggest you sort the drive attachment bug and any others soon, as in the fall of this year, with Apple's iOS5 and their more comprehensive cloud support, you stand to lose a bunch of formerly happy P'plug users who are feeling like this is more of a pink 'rain' cloud on what you started as a wonderful and useful hardware idea. Please respond better in toto to these concerns, not off on the side, one user at a time, invisible to the larger community. Even if all you have to say at the time is "we hear you, we're working on it" that would raise confidence a bit.

Completely agree with E Pogo. Tech support has been useless, merely repeating the automoton steps that are alredy on the website. For the millionth time, I have done ALL of that and the Pogoplus STILL keeps throwing my HD off. I thought I had it sorted the other day as I could FINALLY see my HD and the folders. Went away for 3 days, came back and POW...gone again. What a piece of crap!

I have exactly the same problem with my PP. It worked properly. I have been on holiday and my PP was not on. When I came back home, it doesn't recognize whatever HD I attach. The repair function doesn't help. I have updated the apps on the IPhone, but nothing helps. Do you think there will be a solution in the near future?

Same problem here -- a few weeks ago I unmounted my external drive from the pogoplug to bulk copy some data across. Just plugged it back in and it's not showing up -- nor are any other USB storage devices that I try to plug in.

August 7, 2011 8:43 AM

This happened to me yesterday and there was nothing wrong with my hard drive.

I just unplugged my pogoplug from the network and the wall and turned off my hard drive (and unplugged that from my pogoplug). Then waited 5 min. or so. Then re-plugged my pogoplugged my pogoplgug into the power source, then added the ethernet cord.

Then turned on my hard drive and plugged it into my pogoplug. Wait about another 5 min and it was showing again.

September 3, 2011 3:21 PM

Is there ever going to be a real fix for this problem? I have had to run Disk Utility several times since I've had my PogoPlug (DeskStar version). I feel like it is a hassle that I shouldn't have to deal with in order to access PP's great feature set.

I had been so looking forward to accessing my media via my family's multiple iOS devices while we travel. I don't think I should have to do a bunch of trouble shooting to make PP work like it was intended. Does anyone have an idea as to what the source of the problem is? What causes the corruption, if that's the problem.

Thanks.
