All my Windows machines are Windows 7, but I did set up a share on a Windows XP machine for a visiting relative. Double click My Computer and then click on Map Network Drive. Once there, select your drive letter desired and for the Folder use \\FADSXXXXXX\WD2TBXXXX. You can select reconnect at logon if desired. This was all from memory, so the screens and names may be somewhat different.
What I've done on my Windows 7 machines and it should work in Windows XP also, is set up a batch file that runs after rebooting that mounts the Dockstar drives for me. Simply put the following in a .bat file:
net use Z: \\FADSXXXXXX\WD2TBXXXX
You can assign any drive letter(Z:) you wish that is not in use.

Sorry for this (probably simple) question. Without installing any software or using a browser - just hooked up to the same LAN, How do I find a plug/Dockstar on Windows?
I've put a 2TB NTFS HDD on there for him but can't get to it.
It's simple on a Mac - but even my husband (PC expert) can't figure it out in Windows. Add network place wizard seems useless.
My plug name is fadsXXXXXX
My HDD name is WD2TBXXXX
I tried following this - http://www.crunchgear.com/2010/05/06/how-to-use-the-seagate-dockstar-on-a-lan... but it didn't work.
Does this work? Does one create the .ceid file in text editor with a .txt extension? And what is "yoursharename"? The name of the drive?
There HAS to be an easier way. Why can't a Windows box see/browse everything that's on a network just automatically?
It's XP-Pro for now though his laptop uses 7 I think.
Thanks - I've found it for him on the XP box using the local IP number - we'll revisit assigning a drive number sometime in the future.

Update - Found it easily in Windows 7 for him. Can access the drive over IP - so that works for now - but not make it appear on the desktop or as an attached drive on XP Pro, yet.
