Transcoding was taking to long. I used handbrake to encode to mp4 and they stream fine. AVI files do just what you are saying but mp4 works
Categories: Other Pogoplug Enabled Devices iPhone & iDevices
Since the Dockstar 2.5.6 firmware update I am unable to play videos on my iPod Touch (2nd Generation, iOS version 4.1). These videos all worked perfectly before the update. Now when I attempt to play one, it loads, plays about ½ second, then goes back to the video list.
I have done a factory restore (reset) on my ipod (had been wanted to do that anyway) and restarted my Dockstar, to no affect.
Problem is, Seagate has 0 support for this device and CEi certainly doesn't "owe" us Dockstar owners anything, so I'm probably just going to have to live with this, maybe there will be another update some time down the road. Like I said before, when Dockstar owners were clammoring for this update, "Be careful of what you wish for, you just may get it!".

OK, except the files have already been transcoded. Again, they were working just fine but stopped working with the new firmware update. I'll try handbrake and see if that helps, but I really don't understand why I should need to go through this step for files that are already trancoded.
PS: I just found this: When I open the pogoplug app and select Movies, only the .AVI files are listed. If I instead navigate to my drive\folder the .avi and .mp4 files are both displayed. But the .mp4 files fail exactly the same as the .avi files.

I just used Handbrake to encode one of my .avi files to .mp4, then copied it to the PP. When I went to the Media Setting screens, the new file was being transcoded, so that was a waste. I'll try the video again, once the transcoding has completed.
__________
Transcoding has completed, now the first 10 seconds of the video plays, but that's all. Weel, that's 10 seconds more than I had before... Sigh.

Transcoding off = 0 Seconds of video
Transcoding on = 10 Seconds of video

Heres the way I have my settings
Stream photos, videos and music to your PS3, XBox360 and FreeAgent Theater+: Enable
Optimize your videos for playback: Never
Create media meta-data (such as music album art): As soon as possible
Generate photo and video thumbnails: As soon as possible
Hope this helps
Also have you upated the Pogo app on your Iphone?
OK, here's the real solution to this issue. I used the following steps, provided by CEi support, and my videos now stream correctly:
The transcoded videos are kept in a hidden folder .cedata on your hard drive. The original files remain untouched, and the transcoded versions are a lot smaller than the originals. Deleting the hard drive's .cedata folder may be able to fix some inconsistency on your attached drive. The fix is relatively simple:1) Safely unmount your hard drive from http://my.pogoplug.com using the eject icon next to the folder representing your hard drive.
2) Attach your drive to your Windows PC, allow it to be discovered.
3) Navigate to the root of your USB external drive.
4) Delete .cedata folder.
5) Safely unmount your hard drive from your PC using the Safely Remove hardware tray applet in the lower right corner of your Desktop.
6) Power cycle your Pogoplug, wait for a solid green LED on the front of the Pogoplug.
7) Power up your drive, and attach to your Pogoplug. After attaching your hard drive to your Pogoplug, some of your files may not be immediately available. Creation of this index folder as well as thumbnail generation for your image files must complete before you will have ready access to data on your Pogoplug attached drive. You can control the media processing options on the media settings page of the website.
While I had the hdd attached to my workstation, I ran some standard maintenance on the drive, just to make sure that all was well. I was amazed at how fragmented the files were.

Yeah that's one of the problems with the pogoplug transcoder functionality. The transcoded videos are stored in the hidden .cedata like you mentioned and there's no real practical way of removing them save deleting the .cedata folder. You can delete individual ones if you can figure out which file is associated with what video.
The other issue is that there's only one transcoded video file. If the preview setting is set, then the pogoplug transcodes only 10 seconds worth of video otherwise it transcodes the whole thing. What the software is supposed to do when there is a 10 second preview and you select it, is to transcode the entire video and replace the 10 second preview file with the new entire transcoded video, but I've found that sometimes that doesn't happen and you get stuck with a 10 second video.
The easiest thing to do is simply disable transcodes and do it yourself. That or set transcodes to the full video, though that takes a very long time and then the transcoded video (which is a very low resolution) gets used for streaming to the PS3/Xbox. There's really no perfect solution.
nope guys still same problem 09:56:38 (57%) converting a movie never takes this long dont try just wait for a patch form pogoplug. 10 hr for a stupid movie 700mb
what format should the movies be on the networked drives in order to avoid these transcode issues, should they be mp4 apple ipod/ipad format? I have the Ipad also and the same thing for me 10 seconds of video and it drops out.
The solution that I posted above allowed my videos to play better on my iPod, but there were still some issues. This morning I updated my iPod to iOS 4.2 and now my videos play just great. Sweet!
