I noticed that my Internet speed wasn't anywhere near what I thought I should be achieving.  I started experimenting and found that when pogoplug is unplugged from my router I can achieve 17.12Mb/s download speed and 1.47 Mb/s upload speed.  With pogoplug connected, my download speed drops to around 3.0 Mb/s download and .40 upload.  I used speedtest.net to verify the results and no matter how many times I try, the results are always the same.

Does anyone have an idea why this is happening?

Hello,

Is the Pogoplug currently being used when you notice this slow-down? Uploading, Downloading, or could anyone you're sharing to be accessing the Pogoplug at the time of your speedtests? Access to your Pogoplug to perform the mentioned tasks require some of your router's networking resources. Also, when the Pogoplug is first connected it tells us about the partitions on the drives connected to it(so the WebApp can display them to you). And it will automatically download new firmware if we have it available. Please allow 2 to 3 minutes after connecting the Pogoplug and seeing a solid green light before running the speed test.

If you do not believe this is the cause, please make a support ticket containing your DeviceID and router model & brand.

Thanks,

The only limit to the Pogoplug is your imagination... and C skills... and linux skills. ^_^ h\t\tp://download.pogoplug.com/opensource/pogoplug-gcc.tar.bz2

I submitted a ticket as I don't believe any of the conditions you mentioned were causing the slowdown.

Thanks.

After submitting a ticket I received the response below.  Although Disk Utility found nothing wrong with my drive, going through the steps below corrected the problem. Kudos to Pogoplug Support for the quick response and advice.

Here's the response I received to my ticket:

Hi Jack

Thanks for contacting us.

It is possible that there is some file inconsistency on your drive(s). To fix this, please try the following:

1) Safely unmount your hard drive from http://my.pogoplug.com using the eject icon next to the folder representing your hard drive.
2) Exit the Pogoplug drive application if you are using it.
3) Attach your drive to your Mac, allow it to be discovered
4) Start Disk Utility, highlight the icon representing your drive and click "Repair" button
5) After Disk Repair is finished,...
6) Safely unmount your hard drive from your Mac by either clicking Unmount in Disk Utility or dragging the icon representing your drive to the Trash.
7) Power cycle your Pogoplug, wait for a solid green LED on the front of the Pogoplug.
8) Power up your drive, and attach to your Pogoplug.

If you recently attached your hard drive to your Pogoplug and your hard drive has a lot of video and photos on it, the Pogoplug needs to process all of the media first in order to ensure proper viewing on the website. Any other actions taken on the Pogoplug during this time will slow down the Pogoplug. You can control the media settings on the media settings page on my.pogoplug.com. It's best to let this process finish completely before accessing your Pogoplug in any other way. We don't have a benchmark, but a 1TB I remember that was filled with videos and photos took a few days to complete the media processing.

Let me know if that works out OK.

Kind Regards
-AdamC
