I'm just getting used to my pogo, and I've just got one drive connected right now.

Last night I uploaded a bunch of files to a folder on my pogo'd drive. Today I decided that I want the folder to be inside another folder (moved).

I'm not home now, so I went to the my.pogo site and did a More Actions > Copy/Move Pogoplug Files. I changed both dropdowns from Copy to Move, and dragged last night's folder full of files to another folder. I was quite surprised to see the Copy dialog appear when I was sure I selected Move. I hit cancel, double checked the Move dropdowns, and did it again. Same result; my Move action triggered the Copy dialog.

The files I want to move are about 10GB total. It's crazy for the pogo to copy and then delete 10GB of data. I can ssh into the pogo and "mv blah/ blahblah" directly on the drive and it will complete in seconds.

This is crazy. Linux knows how to do a Move, pogo is built on Linux, therefore pogo should do a "proper" move instead of copy then delete.

Am I doing something wrong, of is this just the way it is?

Thanks!

Hello,

You are right. A "move" via the webapp is actually a Copy+DeleteSource.
Using the DriveApp you'll notice the move to be very much faster.

There is(was?) a technical reason for this at one point in time.

I see.
Is what you're calling "DriveApp" the same as "Pogoplug Drive" from the Downloads section of my.pogoplug.com?

I assume you work for the company, right? Can you at least suggest that this get "fixed"?

Also, I would think it would work better in the webapp than in the mapping software, since it takes the client OS out of the equation...
Is the better moving functionality supported on Win, Mac, and Lin?

Thanks again.

Yup, "DriveApp" equal "Pogoplug Drive" from http://www.pogoplug.com/home-en-support-downloads.html

Indeed, I am one of the Cloud-Engines employees lurking about the forums. I'll point the developers to this thread.

The Pogoplug Drive app works for Windows, macs and Linux(to an extent).
These should all implement "move" much faster.

Okay,

So the reason for this Copy+DeleteSource, is in the situations where people are moving between 2 different harddrives. Or 2 different partitions on the same harddrive. Even the native Linux "mv" command does a copy+delete when moving between 2 harddrives.

It has been noted that we probably should have a special-case native linux move when the source and destination are within the same file system. In the meanwhile, the DriveApp is the way to go for speedy moves.

Totally understood. That said, surely the device should know the origin/destination of the files and be able to work better.

Well if it helps, mine seems to just 'Move' via the webApp.

I just went to move a batch of birthday photos from one folder to another, half way through, firefox crashed.

Went back to My.Pogo and all the originals are gone and it's only copied over a few of the photos. Checked 30 minutes later, same number of photos so it isn't still copying.

I wish mine DID copy then delete cos then I wouldn't have lost over 100 photos from a mate's birthday :\ lol. Live and learn, wait for new backup drive to arrive before attempting to move or copy anything :S
