Given the symptoms, I would suspect the power supply. Do you have a way of checking it's output voltage?
Death is Conquered While You Slumber- Seven is the Perfect Number
Categories: Pogoplug Classic
Within the last day, my V1 Pogoplug seems to have died. It was working fine yesterday. This morning, however, neither of the status lights was on and the light on the connected drive was off. The only indication that it's not unplugged is that the two LEDs on the ethernet connector are very dimly flashing.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Not without cracking open the Pogoplug. I'm not even sure how the V1 is held together...

Yeh, I can see that. I've not owned one by my guess is that those feet on the bottom are hiding the screwheads but, even if that's the case, there's no telling what you'll find once you're in there.
The good news its that the functionally compatible Dockstar is available on the cheap, here's just one example: http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&keywords=dockstar&tag=thexplanedatasi...

Yep. That's where they are alright. In a brilliant bit of design, the feet aren't actually glued in place, just friction fit. I wish more companies would do that.
As for the Dockstar... Well, I may look into it, but at this point I'm thinking that I really don't want to invest more money into this.
@jtk, if you haven't done so already, please submit a ticket to support at support.pogoplug.com, so that they can help you resolve this issue.
Yep. Power supply is toast. Smelled it as soon as I opened the little metal shielding box is packaged in. Picture a sealed metal box with no ventilation. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did.
@Nicky Pogo
Done. It's out of warranty so they offered me a new one at a discount. I'm not sure if I'm going to take them up on it.
You wouldn't happen to have any spare V1 power supplies laying around, would you?
Exact same problem. Worked one day, no workie the next day. Clearly a design flaw that they've fixed in the new revision but I would have thought my PogoPlug would have outlasted the five year old drive attached to it. Interesting, too, this time frame. I guess well it's just one of those things, but it stings.
@jtk, did you end up getting a new one? I'm thinking I'll abandon Pogo in lieu of DropBox or some kind of other service.
Sucks to be an early adapter. Maybe we should learn our lessons.
Thanks for the recommendation LEO LAPORTE and MacBreak Weekly.

Yeah, the power supply in the V1 wasn't really designed for durability. Mine lasted almost exactly 14 months. I always get suspicious when devices die just after the warranty period ends.
I've ordered one of the new units. When I submitted a ticket, they sent me a discount code for $30 off a new one, so I ordered one. It actually only amounts to just over $12 off once you factor in their outrageous shipping rates. We'll see how long this one lasts.
I do use DropBox extensively, but there are some things that the Pogoplug (and other such devices) can do that really can't be done with DropBox. Still, if you only need to share small files between systems, the Pogoplug doesn't really make sense.
jtk, sorry I'm a little late to this thread. Send an email to support@pogoplug.com and reference this post and mention my name. Let me see what we can do for you to make up for the faulty power supply - the early adopters gave us our start and I want to make sure we show our appreciation.
Jed.
My V1 pogoplug just died. I cannot do any printing from my HP CP1518ni without a working pogoplug. The 2 status LEDs aren't light and the LEDs on the Ethernet plug blink periodically. The power supply cannot supply sufficient current to sustain operations. The CPU is all the time in reset.
2 options, use an external 5V power supply or fix it. (Saturday night definitely I cannot get a 5V 2.5A power supply, the one from the DLINK router would work)
To fix it take the unit apart. Screws are located under the rubber feet. Get to the power supply box and cheerfully open it. There are 2 broken electrolytic capacitors 1000uF 10V near the 5V DC output (red and black wires with the white JSt connector going to the PCB). Easy repair if you have a soldering iron. I harvested the capacitors from an old P2 motherboard (1000uF 6.3V). Monday I will replace internal the power supply with an external unit.
Hi vst,
I have the same issue as you: v1 with dead lights and when I opened the power supply, capacitor goo was all over the place. Looks like the 6.8uF/400V by where the wires come in from the wall socket is the culprit. Anyway, I'm more of a software than hardware person but I was wondering if I could hook the plug up to the 5V/ground of a standard ATX power supply to confirm the power supply is the issue before I order a replacement. Would this work, or will I fry my plug?
Just wondering,
-DeadPogo
Well guys, after my new good friend, Robbie Ferguson, Host
Category5 Technology TV, informed me that PogoPlug v1 was a Sheeva, we're all fixed up.
Sheeva, through GlobalScale, actually sells replacement power supplies ( guess they knew it was going to be a dud ). I picked up two of them, just to be safe. I'll probably never use the second one.

Shipping is slow, but it's a cheap fix for someone who doesn't want to part with an old friend.
I have exactly the same issue. It stopped working, the main leds are no longer on, and I have a dim flash on the network leds.
I've just opened a support ticket....we'll see how it goes, but I don't want to have to buy one of these things every year. I had hoped they'd be a little better built than that. I got one of the first ones of course--like someone said, it's the price you pay to be an early adopter--beta testing products!
Ahh.. mine just quit working yesterday. I feel naked without it. I put in a support ticket. I did not know this was a common issue with the 1st gens. Hoping for a good discount on a new one. I must be the only one who wanted a pink one! I'm bummed the pink ones are gone for the USA. Maybe they'll find me one, or a fab discount on the new video one they haven't started selling yet.
Hey guys, no joke, go buy the part for $10 and move on with life. Shipping is slow as hell. But, it's good for V1 if that works for you. I'm no longer a Pogo user, went to Synology, but I have a V1 and a V1 power supply. If anyone is interested email me (jeremy.goldsworthy@gmail.com)...
I'm bothered that no one's answered me from support yet. They previously have always got back to me right away.... but I liked my pogoplug a lot and they're selling the pink ones off at tigerdirect for $44 while supplies last, so I went ahead and just bought a new one since it's cheap.
seriously, if you can take four screws out, you can fix it. you have have both for $50.00. I'M DONE with these pogos.
Anyone want to buy my pogoplug and the extra power supply for gen1? Make me an offer...
mail: jeremy.goldsworthy@gmail.com
Support got back to me and offered me a deal on the pogoplug pro but I had already bought the $44 pink one at tigerdirect. I'm not complaining. I love pink electronics and I have a collection of them. Set up in minutes and I'm back in action. Had to rearrange the shelf though. The v2 one is much bigger!

For the Power Supply.
Or get a GoFlex Net for $29.99 at Office Depot. Some still have them.
