While there have been a few reports of some drives not spinning down when idle, In general... the WebApp, under Settings, MediaSettings - if you see things in the queue like: Scanning Media, Pending Thumbnail, Pending Transcode, Pending Metadata - These processes access the harddrive until completion.

The WebApp(in listView) has columns Name,Size,Date,Type that you can sort by.

The listView option, when logged in and viewing your library, is the left-most button at the bottom of the Webapp
