@dunk, I'm sorry things aren't going so well for you so far. Let me see if I can help address some of your concerns.
>>Pogoplug pro running
>>2 hd plugged in 1.5Tb seagate and 300Gig WD passport.
>>both formatted for pogoplugs (which took a long time to figure out)
There was a problem with GUID partition tables on drives that were plugged into the Pogoplug Pro. This issue has been resolved in the 2.5.7 firmware update that was pushed out to Pogoplug Pros today, so there shouldn't be any problems figuring which filesystem/partition table works with Pogoplug Pro. FAT 32, NTFS, HFS+J, EXT2, EXT3, GUID and MBR are all supported filesystems/partition tables (respectively).
>>Macbook 2.4 64bit Snow leopard
Unfortunately, the current version of the Mac Drive App does not support the 64 bit kernel on OSX at this time.
>>First issue was the inability to download torrents over pogoplug
I will respond to this in the other thread
>>After many reboots of pogoplug, restarts of client s/w and unplugging and replugging, sometimes I can see all drives on my LAN.
>>Come back the next day, one is available, or none.
>>Maybe once I've seen one drive over the WAN.
The 2.5.7 update resolved some stability issues in certain Pogoplug Pro configurations. Please see if your drive not available issues are resolved with this update. If not, you should definitely submit a ticket with support. They will retrieve the necessary logs from your Pogoplug that will help us to identify and fix the problems you are seeing.
>>Iphone very similar, very rare to see both drives. Still cannot view any movies even over LAN.
If your drives aren't showing up in Web App or Drive App, then they won't shpw up in the iPhone app either. This would indicate a larger issue independent of the particular client you are using to access your Pogoplug drives.
Regarding not being able to play movies on iPhone: sometimes, the iPhone grows very low on memory. When this happens, it can wreak havoc in different ways for different apps. I have noticed that with the Pogoplug app, this low memory condition tends to affect playback; specifically, movies would not play. I have always been able to solve the problem by rebooting my iPhone. You should try the same and see if it fixed things for you.
>>after many hours messing with it the only conclusions I can arrive at (and using forums as input) is:
>> Pogoplug doesn't support Mac on 64bit
Correct. Unfortunately, this is unsupported at this time.
>> Pogoplug doesn't work well across multiple different machines
Without more detail on exactly what the problem is, it's difficult to understand what you mean here.
>> Doesn't support NTFS correctly
Again, details are important here. Pogoplug definitely supports NTFS. In your other post, you brought up NTFS drives appearing as FAT32. This is true only for the Windows Drive App. In Windows, the Drive App reports all files systems as FAT32. Whether or not the FAT32 file size limit is imposed on the files your are trying to copy depends on the software you are using to copy the files. For instance, using Windows Explorer to drag and drop large files to a Drive App -mounted NTFS drive will work, even though the drive is reported as FAT32. Again, I will respond to this issue more specifically in the other thread.
>> I've got a bad one
This is possible, but it's best to see if either the update fixes some of your issues, or to let support help to determine where the problem lies.
>> I'm an idiot
Certainly not! =)

I've just submitted this to pogoplug support as a last attempt.
If anyone here has any magic to weave to help here - please let me know! thanks...

It somewhat pains me to have to write this, I so wanted Pogoplug to be a successful product, but I'm afraid I've had nothing but issues.
About to take the product back, but I see on pogoplugged, you've really encouraged dissatisfied users to lodge support requests in the hope you can fix - so I'll go to that effort and hope you can help.
On a fundamental level, I have to report the product really doesn't work for my setup, I've spent hours and hours trying to find solutions, reading forums etc... the average user would have given up long ago.
In an attempt to summarize:
Setup:
Pogoplug pro running
2 hd plugged in 1.5Tb seagate and 300Gig WD passport.
both formatted for pogoplugs (which took a long time to figure out)
Machines running client s/w: 2.1.2
Dell M1330 Win7 Ultimate 64bit
Macbook 2.4 64bit Snow leopard
Macbook 2.2 Leopard
Iphone 3GS
Issues:
Initially after figuring out how to correctly format drives, seemed to work ok.
First issue was the inability to download torrents over pogoplug, seemed to be a known problem with perceived file size limitations... I posted it here http://www.pogoplugged.com/forum/thread/14888/File-system-size-limit..../?hig... and to support. I got a 'we are looking into it' from support but then never heard from them again.
However the fundamental main issue is across all machines client s/w fails to work consistently. After many reboots of pogoplug, restarts of client s/w and unplugging and replugging, sometimes I can see all drives on my LAN. Come back the next day, one is available, or none. Maybe once I've seen one drive over the WAN.
Iphone very similar, very rare to see both drives. Still cannot view any movies even over LAN.
I can never just get the setup working and have it reliably work for longer than an hour or two.
I've tried re installs, all sorts of messing with Mac Fuse and various other tools. reboots, replugging....after many hours messing with it the only conclusions I can arrive at (and using forums as input) is:
- Pogoplug doesn't support Mac on 64bit
- Pogoplug doesn't work well across multiple different machines
- Doesn't support NTFS correctly
- I've got a bad one
- I'm an idiot
As I've been writing this on my Win7 machine, yet again Pogoplug has hung. After hacking it off in task manager, restarting - all I get for the 234th time is "files shared with me" instead of actually seeing my drives - which I can see across the room are plugged in and lit up...
All I please ask is an honest reply. I understand the complexity of a product like this, I know it's not easy. If there really is a route forward here I'd really appreciate it, but if anyone from CE has got as far as to read this, and the conclusion is 'we're never going to solve for this use case in the short term' all I ask is a polite response, and I'll take the product back - no hard feelings I promise, I know it was unlikely to be a simple solution for my needs...
please do let me know!
I agree, this product sux. Simple as that. I have all the above bugs, but the main one is drives drop off EVERYDAY and I have ti unplug the stupid thing.
Hello? Planet earth to Pogoplug admins? Do you even acknowledge these bugs?
I've just bought Pogoplug Pro and set it up last night. This morning my drives disappeared and since I'm at work I can't do a single thing about it. This isn't why I got Pogoplug, not a happy bunny.
I have the same problem with drives dropping out. I have a Maxtor 750GB Desktop External Drive and a Maxtor 160GB Portable Drive. The Desktop drive does use a power cord which I do plug in. The portable drive does not use a power cord. Both drives drop out. It seems that it happens mostly when I try to move too much info from EITHER drive. I have noticed when I go in to settings that certain options on the left are no longer available/visible. I then unplug power to the pogo and unplug all USB drives. I then plug power back in to the pogo, wait for a solid green, then plug my drives back in. The drives then appear. I think that the "OS" or system software ON the pogoplug is crashing. I am going to take my Pogoplug Pro back. I cannot afford to something so unreliable for my information/data. What if the Pogoplug keeps crashing? I might eventually take out my drives all together. Sorry, but not worth taking a chance. Great concept though. They need more polish.
Some of the disappearing drive issues should have been resolved with the 2.5.7 release. Please send an email to support@pogoplug.com if you are still having issues.
Well it hasn't worked for mine. As an experiment I've turned off the media scanning.

Things have got better in the last few days. With help from Pogoplug support I've been able to isolate the problem that my 2 years old WD Passport drive was probably occasionally drawing too much power from the USB port and hence it had USB errors which could have contributed to the drives dropping off the network. I've attached a modern USB powered drive and it has been running for something like 2+ days without a problem. Great stuff from support.
Disappearing drives.
All my drives disappeared after a short time of inactivity, it seemed to be about 4 hours, or so but every time I had t go reboot pogo plug then it would be fine.
I am thrilled to say I fixed it and interestingly enough it really wasn't anything on the pogo plug.
I looked at dhcp clients in my router. The pogo plug was not listed. Which told me that the pogo plug might not have a valid ip address anymore. It occurred to me that for some reason the pogoplu was losing the ip address when it when it went to sleep and not running dhcp discovery when it woke up to reinitialize the ip or another device had taken it's address in the meantime who knows.
Anyway I changed my dhcp lease time to forever which means my router will never give out that address to anything. The drives have not disappeared since.
I would bet money that would fix it for many of the posts I see on the forum. It's your router losing ip connection to pogo plug.
I think the frustration comes from the fact that this thing is so fantastic that we are upset when it seems to not deliver. Knock on wood, mine is working and it's exactly what I have been looking for.
for the 64-bit kernel of Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard, the issue is that it uses the MacFuse driver to access the drives and THAT is a 32-bit app. There is an unofficial MacFuse by a developer at Google which DOES support the 64-bit kernel and it has been very successful for my 64-bit Macs. You can download it at:
http://caurea.org/2009/09/15/unofficial-macfuse-release-for-64bit-kernels/
I hope this will help you.
Hi I wanted to post a belated follow up to my original post here.
Long story short, some credit due to CE support, they have worked with me over weeks to figure most of the issues out. As of now my pogoplug mostly stays up and pretty much works.
Some learnings:
- Still doesn't work properly on Mac 64bit (as the support guy mentioned) not tried the fix Athurman suggested but will do.
- I've turned off wifi which seemed to fix most remaining issues, suggest anyone else still having similar problems tries that.
- I've never got my iphone playing movies, but sure if I were to start messing it could be fixed, but not high priority right now.
So I guess my conclusion would be that out of the box the product didn't really work as advertised, and I was on the verge of taking it back. Credit to support they really did put in some good effort to get it working, but I'm not sure that's a scalable solution in the long run. I'll also not that perhaps some of my requirements were fringe cases - i.e. most people will just throw on one NTFS Win formatted hard drive and a windows machine and that's it.
So glad we finally got it working, and hopefully CE can fix this kind of troubleshooting moving forward, would be nice to see them continue to build on their early success...
Anyhow that's it - just wanted to close the loop here.
