I bought my Pogoplug on Tuesday.  No problem setting it up using a 2.5" Iomega portable hard drive (which has a Samsung hard drive in it).

Happily used the Pogoplug on netbook and iPhone since then.  This morning the hard drive was no longer showing.  Disconnected, ran chckdisk, re-connected, recognised and waited for everything on it to be discovered again.  Everything was fine.

But just checked before going to bed and yet again my drive is not there.  Run chkdisk again but cannot get the Pogoplug to recognise the drive.

So now I can no longer use the device which is somewhat annoying as I had sent a mail to someone about some files on there.  I've also spent ages today housekeeping the hard drive, removing things I do not want on there and adding others.

As the device worked fine for four days anyone any idea why suddenly it will not work?  I'm using the portable drive as I do not need to leave it connected to power (my room is a mess of cables and I want to avoid having yet another item plugged in to power as I have limited connections).

You may have already done this:

Go to my.pogoplug.com page and eject the offending drive.

Unplug the the drive , wait a few seconds and replug.

click on the refresh button (my.pogoplug.com page)

sign out and sign back in.

This worked for me.

Hi - can't do that as the drive doesn't show. Pogoplug have replied to me but I am still having problems. The hard drive is now not even recognised by my PC. So I tried connecting the other hard drive I had originally connected to the Pogoplug. That too was not recognised so I am running chkdsk on that but the last 5% is taking forever so I can't try attaching that again.

Both hard drives have never given problems before, the smaller hard drive is only about 3 months old. I had not moved it, turned it off, nothing, yet suddenly stopped working - drivers cannot be installed and the error code is 43 and system is telling me to get a new device - yet it is a new one so naturally I am not happy.

I've mailed Pogoplug with all of this but I'm not going to be able to access my files for some days as I'm not around to keep trying things on this. Shame as it all seemed so good - I feel I fated this because I was telling people how good this was and how useful. :(

Does your hard disk have it's own power supply or is it USB powered? Are you using the USB port to power the device? (I think you are from your post) If you have a dedicated power supply for the HDD then use it and check if the problem still exists. Some USB devices don't get sufficient power from the USB port to operate reliably, some even come with Y-USB cables so they can connect to 2 USB host ports to ensure adequate power availability!)
You may also need to connect your HDD to your PC and do the chkdsk routine to get the drive corrected first.
Worth a try!

Remember, its not what life does to you, but what you do with what life does to you, that matters.

i'm having the same issue. I have been through all the troubleshooting about ensuring the drives are good, they're properly powered up and that they are all connected properly and in the right sequence.

The Pogo CONSTANTLY looses the drives. I can't eject properly either because they don't show up. This is annoying. I'm close to just returning this.

I was able to run chkdsk on the larger hard drive and it is now connected properly. Neighbour managed to connect the smaller hard drive to their PC and run chkdsk and the moment I connected it to my own it was recognised. I haven't re-connected it to pogoplug yet as I'm leaving well alone till the weekend.

Williboy - yes, the smaller drive is powered from the pogoplug as it does not have its own power supply - it does have one of those split cables so you can run it from two usb ports to increase power - but it had been sitting there happily for a few days.

Possible reasons for the 'failure' was disconnection, whether by power loss or moving the hard drive - to be honest the connections on the smaller hard drives are not as robust as the larger ones, this one is an Iomega and it connects to one side and doesn't feel as secure as it ought to be. However I'm 99% sure I did not move the drive and the problem occurred on a day when I was home all the time and there was no power loss.

Taylor, can't help I'm afraid, luckily for me I got going again, although I think I will have to not rely too much on it remaining connected.

same problem here in macintosh--everything works for awhile, then nothing works.

this device is WILDLY unreliable!

I have the same problem. i've use my Pogoplug a few days now. At first, everything works without a problem, then suddenly I get a message that my pogoplug does not have a hard drive attached can and front LED flashes. When I plug everything back again, everything works great, but never longer than 12ur. I use WD 2.5 inch disk drive without power.ΒΈ
Currently I am very disappointed, because the device does not function as described. Constant-reconecting drive does not make sense.

I ask for help if there is a solution.

the obvious use for this drive is transfer and backup.

great idea for a product but worse case scenario is have a lot of early adopters use an unreliable product.

hint to investors--either fix the problems FAST or start shorting the stock,,,,

I had it too: Pogo killed my Hard drive, will not appear anywhere, Gonzo.

Hate this product? what are they thinking releasing this out in the wild?

October 30, 2010 5:18 PM

oops. I didn't know the stock was Public????

Short of the year!!

Hi Gang,

I too have been having these intermittent drives dissappearing issues. I've tried 3 seperate drives and have observed the following:

1. When accessing from iPhone - if I go into directory with large amount of files, I can pretty much hose up my router which in turn will force everything connected to it to hose up.

2. If drive has dissapeared (Windows env.) then I'm forced to unhook the drive and plug it directly into usb drive of a given system and am forced to run chkdsk and repair drive and then plug it back in to PogoPlug.

3. The whole media processing business is erratic, I've started from scratch on external drive and have progressively moved up..

My 2 cents,

"oops. I didn't know the stock was Public????"

don't know if it is, but if it isn't, the typical move is to try to go public or get bought. neither is an option if it flies like a lead balloon...

My drives keep disappearing as well and I've had to chkdsk and reformat them several times.

Obviously at this point you should never store any original files on disks connected your PogoPlug device. Only use it for sharing copies of your files.

Also, I have only connected some of my smallest drives (two 300G passport drives and two 2G memory sticks) to the PogoPlug to limit the damage when it crashes or has to have chkdsk run on it.

I can see this device being very useful when they get the bugs worked out, but until then use it very cautiously.

Looks like most of our problems are with portable drives/usb sticks. Could it be because they do not have their own power supply and thus are prone to easier disconnection?

I've left my larger drive connected and so far so good, although I would rather use the smaller as said before.

November 2, 2010 5:19 PM

I don't have any issue with a Thumb drive on the Pogoplug. I have a basic 8GB thumb drive that I put my Biz's Custom logo, Favicon and background on. It has been running for a few weeks now without disappearing.
My hard drives are all NTFS and have no problems.

Could it be that you are accessing from a mobile device and from a PC and the Mobile device is causing an issue?

This thing just cannot hold 24 hrs without dropping drive.

I have to unplug power chord every time, so maybe a simple remote reboot would allow us to live until you guys figure this out.

A reboot feature is a basic necessity here.

do you get whats happening? by keeping this on a private forum, the google robots can't find out what a crappy product this is...

searches get no criticism, only promising report by pogue, et al

Mine hasn't lost connection to the drive since I did that change last week so if you've not already done so, run chkdsk before re-attaching next time it loses connection.

The cable to a powered hard drive is more securely attached than one to an unpowered so wonder if that has anything to do with disconnection - I will be re-attaching my portable hard drive tomorrow if I get time, and will leave connected and see what happens - but the cable for that connects via a min-usb and it is not as stable a connection as I would like.

November 11, 2010 1:01 PM

I had the same problem with my Freecom 2 Tb harddrive.
My pogoplug didn't recognize it and my own computer didn't have any problems detecting it.
Even after a checksum my pogoplug didn't found the harddrive

On one of the forums I read that the pogoplug needs DHCP and that got me thinking
My old situation was:
ADSL Modem => Router => Pogoplug
I changed the situation to:
ADSL Modem => Pogoplug

And guess what...
Finally it recognized the harddrive!

I recommened everybody to check if this could be your situation and if so, this could be your solution!

Best of luck :)

Well after two months with no problems today I accidentally very gently nudged the hard drive as I accessed something alongside it.

So back to square one with the hard drive not being recognised. I've attached it to a PC and run chk dsk and it was okay, turned Pogoplug off, on again, waited for all the lights, re-connected hard drive but does not show.

I have done this again on a different PC and re-connected to Pogoplug and still does not show.

So has anyone come up with a different solution that might get me working again?

Thank heavens this did not happen before Christmas, being connected to this hard drive whilst at my parents was a great help. But it won't be much help to me as of now if I can't get the same hard drive recognised by the Pogoplug.

Again caused by a failing of the cable attachment to a portable hard drive, the mini usb is just not a secure enough connection. Presumably the problem is caused because the hard drive was not ejected properly which is probably not a fault of the Pogoplug, but for me it is important I can leave a portable hard drive attached rather than a larger powered hard drive.

Would love to sing this things praises as I love the theory, but the execution is garbage.

Have used it VERY sporadically and now a few months later it will not recognize a hard drive. ANY hard drive I feed it.

Had the same chkdsk issues as others--would royally screw the drive over. Now after a fresh format, reboot etc--no dice.

Googling this issue yields next to nothing. Coming here to post a support ticket results in being told to log in. Clicking "log in" I'm faced with a "you're already logged in" and then booted to the log in page again. Jumped through the hoops and had them send an updated "invite" to my email address. Clicked that and it asked me for a password. I enter my password and it tells me I'm already logged in.

And around and around we go.

Keep up the great work.

Edit: and THEN I almost couldn't post this very message as it told me I wasn't registered or logged in! Brilliant!

My argument against uploading all our memories to flickr is ringing hollow in my wife's ears right now. flickr, I'm told, "works".

Third night running I have run chkdks on the hard drive, turned off the Pogoplug, waited, turned it on again, ensured all lights on, connected hard drive and still not recognised as being there.

Theres a folder on the hard drive CEDB something or other, which presumably was created when the hard drive was originally connected to the pogoplug - should I perhaps delete that in case that is not being read?

The main problem with these small hard drives is that the usb cables connected to the hard drive are so easily knocked out, the connection is not secure. But I really do not want my powered back up hard drive permanently plugged in to the computer (I keep it hidden away so should I be burgled and the computer stolen I would at least have my data to put on to a new PC) plus the constant flashing blue light on the hard drive was annoying (there's enough lights on in this room, standby on tv,dvd, on the switches on my extension lead, on the router, computer, monitor etc. etc. without adding the hard drive to it as well.

January 11, 2011 3:39 PM

Neighbour has just lent me their portable hard drive, that has connected correctly. This one is a newer hard drive (about a month old) WD Elements with a very short cable which has a micro usb connector rather than a mini usb connector. The shorter cable seems more sensible as the weight of the cable is not pulling on the connector to the hard drive (my other one has one of those y shaped cables).

So this is obviously not really a fault of the Pogoplug as it seems to be down to the hard drive's loose connection and there's not really anything that can be done about that other than get a portable hard drive with a stable connection.
