Now that it appears that the new firmware is stable and has been pushed to all the Pogoplug devices, what's the status on upgrading the Seagate Dockstars?

While the Pogoplug/Dockstar devices offer a great deal of unique functionality, I find myself frustrated by several things:

1) The methodology by which updates are rolled out leaves a great deal to be desired. Because of the devices very nature, most users will have some technical capability and restricting firmware updates really seems silly.

2) The relationship between Seagate and Pogoplug isn't clear. At the very least, Dockstar owners feel like the "red headed stepchild". We get little to no attention from Seagate and Pogoplug's general answer is "were talking to Seagate about how to do ...". As a consumer, it "tastes" bad and reeks of poor support.

While I appreciate the community here and all who contribute to it, I sure wonder if the Dockstar will get the support needed to "be all that it can be" or if I'm really holding onto a product with no real future.

Just my thoughts...

To point 1: That's the case with both the Dockstar and PogoPlug, so that's not germane to this conversation, and has already been discussed ad-naseum on these forums.

To point 2: If the truth be told, must of us Dockstar owners are Dockstar owners because they were available on the cheap ($20 or so), so I just remember that we get what we pay for.

Would I like the updates for my dockstar? Sure, I guess. But, as it turns out, my dockstar does everything that it is supposed to do, takes up less desk space and doesn't have so much as a wisp of pink on it. It works great and and it's certainly not just sitting around collecting dust while waiting for a software update. I'm happy with it the way that it is.

One thing that I've learned is that CEi is pretty up-front and tries to keep it's customers in the loop on issues of this nature. If they are saying that they are working with Seagate on this issue, then I believe that they are and that works for me.

You have purchased a product manufactured by Seagate therefore your dissatisfaction about the poor software update service is with Seagate not pogoplug. Pogoplug provide a service under contract to Seagate not to you the Seagate customer. Are you making your satisfaction known to Seagate?

I don't think you'll get any satisfaction complaining to pogoplug because I think Seagate must initiate/authorise Dockstar updates.

However I do agree that it seems very poor customer service by Seagate.

Remember, its not what life does to you, but what you do with what life does to you, that matters.

I'm primarily dissatisfied with Seagate, but Pogoplug by extension.  How do you know who is living up to their side of the agreement between Seagate and Pogoplug?

You want to punt all responsibility to Seagate, but I can't help but believe that Pogoplug has some responsibilty as well.

Guys - I'm not here to just contribute to the volume of "whine".  I really like this product, but am frustrated by the level of support (or lack of) being provided by either Seagate or Pogoplug.  It's clear that the Pogoplug guys will help out if contacted and I think that's admirable, but on the firmware issue, there seems no progress or clear answers.  "We're discussing with Seagate" is hardly clear and frankly just points out that their contractual agreement between companies has holes in it.

You are correct that it is a Seagate product and should be supported by Seagate. However, the Pogoplug service is a PAID service to Pogoplug when using the Dockstar. The first year is free but payable annually to Pogoplug after that. In that case then it is Pogoplugs responsibility to the customer. The Dockstar is unique in that it does not require the use of the Pogoplug software unless you want to make the drives accessible via the internet. I chose to register my device with Pogoplug and will be paying the annual fee after my one year is up. To me, that puts the ball in Pogoplug's court to provide me with the service I contracted for with them.

We all know that Seagate support sucks when it comes to the Dockstar. There is a precedent in that there was a previous firmware upgrade pushed to my Dockstar after my initial setup. Whether is was pushed by Seagate or Pogoplug I don't know. My guess is it was Pogoplug.

This is no longer the case. Dockstar users do not pay an annual fee to Seagate or CEi. This is well documented elsewhere in these forums.

I have searched and haven't found any reference to the Pogoplug service being free for Dockstar users. Could you provide me with links to some of these forums that reference that? Thank you.

Thank you! I appreciate you responding. I hadn't seen this information and I'm guessing that most of the Dockstar users art unaware as well. It's great news that I won't have to fork over money to renew.

Any fellow Dockstar owners heard any information about the new firmware?

November 6, 2010 4:07 PM

I know it exists and has been tested, but I don't know when or if it will ever be pushed out. As far as I know there has been zero communication from either Seagate or Pogoplug on the matter. Seagate's support site for the Dockstar is virtually non-existent.

Morac, can you please explain how you know this? What's your source of info? I mean, other than the stuff about non-existent Dockstar support from Seagate, how do you know if the update exsists and has been tested and about any communication between the 2 companies? Enquiring minds want to know!Laughing

Has a new Dockstar firmware (2.5.6) been released? When I go to the website, it shows that the device firmware has been updated: yesterday was 2.1.2, whereas today is 2.5.6.

Different experiences? Changelog?

Thanks.

November 9, 2010 12:10 AM updated: November 9, 2010 12:11 AM

I received 2.5.6 as well I've learned that Seagate has approved te firmware update, which is the 2.5.6 version we just got. I assume an official announcement will be made at some point Other than the print functionality added in 2.5, I don't know what's the difference between 2.5.6 and the 2.5.4 release that's been going out to Pogoplug users.

Note that the dockstar.pogoplug.com site hasn't been updated yet so the print functionality isn't there yet. You can use my.pogoplug.com if you get 2.5.6.

With all of your inside knowlege, can you explain how this update was pushed when there was "zero communication from either Seagate or Pogoplug (by which I assume that you meant CloudEngines, Inc.) on the matter"? I thought that the 2 companies would have to coordinate on an update of this nature.

I always use the dockstar.pogoplug.com to connect to my PP and it was able to locate my wirelessly connected Epson NX 515 printer with no problems. I still can't think of any valid reason to use this feature, but there it is!

I also received the 2.5.6 firmware on my Dockstar last night. I will be connecting my wide carriage HP B8550 to it later today. I have avoided buying a print server to share the printer and am looking forward to the convenience of placing the printer in a central location for everyone in the house to access it as well as being able to print from my iPhone.

November 9, 2010 6:40 PM

Print is now enabled, It finds my printer ok. But wont print. Trying to print from Ipad which also located the printer in the pogo app. Went to pogoplug app on computer to retry print and it also fails Any ideas?

November 9, 2010 6:47 PM updated: November 9, 2010 6:56 PM

Ive tried printing 2 ways. Once by email from Ipad and once from pogo app on Ipad

Tried going to dockstar.pogoplug.com and print setting not available but it is on my pogoplug.com

@raceman

I also have an HP printer (J4680), and a dockstar. I have enabled the print feature, but the dockstar says "no printers found" when I try to check the "print my email attachments to" box. Could you please elaborate on "turning on the network" under the printer properties? I looked under properties, but there is a lot I feel I could mess up.

Thanks in advance.

Under security tab in print prop, click add , then network services.

This is with Window 7 64 bit

Just to confirm, all Dockstars should be updated to 2.5.6 firmware. If you find that for some reason yours is not, please submit a support ticket at support.pogoplug.com.

Enjoy!

November 12, 2010 2:44 AM

I got the update (2.5.6) for my dockstor, however I find that my /tmp folder is getting filled with core_hbplug_* files and I could not access any partition from my.pogoplug.com.

What could be the problem? How can I confirm that my firmware update was properly carried out.

Please suggest a solution.

November 12, 2010 12:10 PM

Vijay, unplug and then replug power to your device. If you already have done this, and your /tmp folder is still being filled with core files, send me your device ID in a private message, and I will work to get you up and running.

November 13, 2010 4:45 AM

Thank you for your response. How to find Device ID and what is your private email?

dmesg output gives the following, will it help?
