That's only sorta true. You can't browse to an mp3 file and do anything other than play it.
However, if you search for it, and then long press on the filename in the search results box, you get the option to download it. And it does download. From within the pogoplug app if you then go to menu-->saved you will find your file there. When you play it, it does not stream it.
Kerb, I am still unable in the Android app to get the option to download an mp3 after the long hold. It will work with documents and pictures without any problem, but songs will definitely only stream on my HTC Desire phone.

It doesn't work if you navigate to the file. You have to search for it.
From the first screen after logging in to the pogoplug app (the correct one is named "Library" at the top of the screen), touch the menu button, then search. Search for the mp3 file you want.
In the search results, long press on the filename and you can share, download, or delete the file. If you choose download, you get a popup that says you will be notified when the download is complete. Which does take several minutes for the 8.8MB file I tested with.
You can then navigate to the file on your sdcard (it ends up in the pogoplug directory).
If you copy it from the pogoplug directory to a directory in /sdcard/Music/ called <artistname>, where <artistname> is the name of the artist, it will show up in android's music player. I suspect any file manager would work for this, the one I used is called root explorer.
I just verified these steps on my HTC Evo which is running the latest pogoplug app from market on Froyo (android 2.2).
Hope this helps
Thanks Kerb,
Tried searching direct from logging in as you suggested and long pressed on the filename and you were correct. I did get the option of downloading the file. From there however, after I got the green tick to tell me the download had completed, I used the back arrow button on my desire and went back to the LIBRARY screen in the Pogoplug App. At the bottom is MY SAVED FILES. My downloaded mp3 was stored in here and was able to play it on the Androids Music Player. I checked it was definitely a saved file and not streaming from the pogoplug by switching off the harddrive attached to the pogopplug and sure enough, I was able to play, pause and skip through the track without any delay. NICE ONE!! It could still be made simpler within the app though I reckon.
Agreed, it should be much simpler.
IMO you should get similar behavior by long pressing the file after navigating to it by following the directory tree.
The good news is, the work is probably already done. As we saw, the code to do the downloading is already there. It seems like it *should* be trivial for them to hook the download functionality into the long press event for the file.
This no longer works. I searched from the first screen for a file and long pressed it. it will only allow me to stream it. I can download pictures, movies and everything else though.
Just tried it again on My HTC Desire using the pogoplug android app prior to the one that is available now and it still works ok for me. From the Library screen, press the search button on your phone and type in the name of the track you are trying to download. Once found, long hold and the option to download should appear. Then go back to Library and once downloaded, you should find your track in the 'My Saved Files'.
I did that on my HTC Inc. and I don't get a menu. I don't have the last version though, only the newest.
That's why I haven't updated to the latest version. It had no relesae notes when first released and the previous version was working perfectly well so I left it as it was. May update on next update if program notes are included from the start. Interesting though, do you know of anyone else having same problems as you are? May be worth letting support know. It could be handset specific.

I did some more searching on this topic and it appears there used to be an square icon by the play, replay, pause button to enable downloading. I do not see this icon anymore (running the latest version of Android software.)
Thanks...
