I get a external hard drive and a pogoplug device, put files on the drive ( which is fast since it is local to me ) and then it gets uploaded to the cloud. Repeat as I add or delete devices on the local pogoplug attached drive. The files and folders are accessable from anywhere I have an internet connection.

Is this correct?

If it is, what makes this different than say a service like Carbonite, other than I don't have an additional local drive to copy to and manage? I'm not asking this to be critical, I'm just want to understand the concept. After all, I get another device to worry about and manage and I want to understand the upside.

Thanks,

S100bus

Why should the files get uploaded to the cloud? I thought that any files would be accessed direct from your drive as & when requested, otherwise why leave the Pogoplug switched on?

But you're right, it would be nice to have an overview in fairly basic terms, of exactly how the system works.

Denis,

Ok, you have the file on the drive, what makes this different then having an external drive and backup program?

I don't see any users manual or network diagram that explains why I want to buy this

I put files onto the pogoplug drive that I may want to share or access from a remote location via the internet onto a pc or iPhone app.

Family & friends around the world are able to access these files at my invitation.
I could do this just using my pc, but that would mean leaving it running continuously. I see the Pogoplug as a mini-pc running a dedicated file-sharing programme.

But I don't really know the details how it works, what the involvement of Pogo's servers is etc etc.

I should add that the Pogoplug is able to do more than what I use it for.
