I have an issue that I'm not quite sure how to address.   I go on vacation in the winter, and I would like to monitor temperature in my home to ensure that if the furnace fails, I will get notified before everything freezes up. Here are some the desirables:

--  I don't have a landline, so the phone dialer options are out.

--  I would like to be able to plug a USB option into my PogoPlug, enabling me to leave my computer off while I am gone.

I have found USB temperature monitors, but they require software running to send email/text alerts.

What are some suggestions as to how to handle this best?

Thanks, gurus!

Peace,

Tom

The following requires that you can program linux and do not mind modifying the pogoplug.
You could install plugbox linux on a usb stick that would boot into plugbox linux.
This would disable all the pogoplug functions.
Then install plugapps software to read the usb thermometer ,then send you the data across the internet (assuming you have some type of internet connection).
Or write your own software to execute on the plugbox.
Not a very easy solution.

Well if you are willing to roll your own, you can buy a "TEMPer USB Thermometer" from Amazon and then if you google for it you can find various linux drivers and linux compatible programs for it. Then assuming you install pluglinux or similar, and have internet access, you'll be good to go.

Now I should add that the UTAC program for this device on sourceforge will drive the device on windows and create a web page for you to view it from anywhere you are located. But that's windows so you'll need something like an old laptop that's left turned on.

Um, another alternative is to get a regular thermometer and an IP webcam. That will permit you to see the temps, but will not provide you with email alerts.

This should not be a problem at all. If you can install Optware, you can run digitemp, and with digitemp, you can read all sorts of 1-wire sensors... including temperature probes.

They are cheap and easy to set up - maybe a buck or two for each of them.

That's correct, I have Optware and Digitemp and everything works perfectly. You should try that too, maybe it will help.

Aye, we have both temp and humidity sensors...

my son & I built this... soldered the boards and fashioned a weather pagoda for it...

Once my Marvell-based Pogoplug EO2 arrives, I can use Debian, a newer kernel, and roll modules for webcams... right now it resides on an Asus router flashed w/ TomatoUSB, tricked out w/ Optware.
