I'm getting a very similar problem.
All my streaming to the PS3 worked fine until some point in the last week. Now getting the "corrupt, cannot play file" message too. Also, it is taking ages for the files to show up, and when they do, they have no thumbnails like they did before.
I'm able to stream Pogoplug files to my mac without problem, and the PS3 is able to stream files from my mac without problem using MediaLink.
I don't know if my Pogoplug is transcoding like yours, but it's actually comforting to see that I'm not completely alone in this.
I'm on firmware 2.5.2 if that makes any difference.

Hello everyone, I'm having a few problems with my pogoplug. But first, a little background.
I've had my pogoplug since August. I attached a 1TB NTFS drive. On it I put all my music, backed up a lot of school files, and some rips of DVD movies (creating a digital library for use of boxee). The box worked perfectly, even with my PS3. Streaming movies to it was not a problem, until last week. Last week, all my media files came up on my PS3 as "corrupt, cannot play file." But, I still had acess them through boxee and through Finder, and they played just fine.
So I thought I would back it all up to a smaller drive. Reformat the 1TB drive. Throw everything back on it, and see if that would fix it. It didn't. I tried different file systems, NTFS, FAT32, HFS+. All of which, on my PS3, would show the file structure, but not the videos inside the folders.
I also noticed that the pogoplug is transcoding all the videos, even though I have all the setting set to never.
Any idea what's going on?
It sounds like we're having the exact same problem.
I'm on the same firmware as you Chris. My PS3 is running 3.5
Yup. Same PS3 firmware here too.
Let's hope somebody can help out with this.
My streaming to PS3 has been broken since the firmware update to 2.5.3. I reported it here;
http://www.pogoplugged.com/forum/thread/14526/Firmware-Upgrade/?page=4#8017
Brandon C, Lead Moderator, informs me that he had already reported this to the pogoplug developers.
I'm currently awaiting resolution.
Perhaps we should each raise a formal support request to ensure speedy resolution.

Remember, its not what life does to you, but what you do with what life does to you, that matters.
Hi guys. I thought I'd let you know I got this reply from Pogoplug support:
Thank you for contacting Pogoplug Support. You were recently upgraded to the newest firmware (version 2.5.3) and we are aware that this causes some buggy behavior when streaming to PS3 devices. We are currently working to resolve this, and a fix will be incorporated into an upcoming firmware release. I have no information regarding an estimated release date. I apologize I don't have a better answer for you at this time.
Expletive deleted!!! I've had exactly the same problem as described above, and I've spent a looong time trying to resolve it. Now I find out it's down to the firmware update!!!!!!! I'm just hopping mad about this. My Pogoplug was working just fine with my PS3 before the update. It's an absolute disgrace!
glad I found this post before I spent too much time trying to solve this same issue. Here's hoping they fix this soon.
Same problem for me too - this is crazy !
How can I downgrade ? Everything was working and they broke it ! Don't these guys have any QA ?
We're working on a minor firmware update for the PS3 streaming issue that will be automatically updated and available soon. Thanks for your patience.
The current workaround for the transcoding issue you're seeing is as follows:
1. attach your drive to the Pogoplug
2. wait for the drive to show up on the general settings page of the website
3. go to the media settings page and if you have the setting 'Allow Pogoplug to optimize videos for playback' set to never, then change it to 'auto-generate preview', then click re-scan, then change the same setting to 'never' and click re-scan
4. this will stop the transcoding process and the media processing queue should be idle
If you continue to see anything strange, feel free to contact us at:

I'm having exactly the same problem.
I have openpogo installed with samba working. My workaround was to install ps3 media server on my laptop, and stream my videos through pms via the samba share.
So I'm going Pogo->Laptop->PS3
Hardly ideal, but it works for now.
This workaround shown above by AdamC does nothing for me apart from from start the transcoding again !
Still can't play anything on PS3. Sigh.
Is the PS3 issue related to the transcoding issue ? This update has rendered my Pogoplug unusable. :(
I'm not sure if it's related but many folder reads even via samba do not seem to work - i.e the drive looks like it's reading but nothing appears on samba client.
Hi Adam. Thanks for chipping in and letting us know you guys know about this problem and are working on it, but the workaround is not working for me either.
So it is still stuck in this endless processing state (processing what ?)
clicking 'stop' does nothing - the workaround actually just cues more pending items - which cannot be stopped and even though when the drives have been 'processed' - they are processed multiple times !
While you guys are working on it - the absolute minimum you can do - is provide a downgrade path so that customers can at least use their Pogoplugs as before.
So can you please provide a link to the 2.10 firmware with instructions on how to roll back the pogoplug to a working version.
Also can you allow customers to disable automatic updates - whatever happened to produce this bad upgrade can you please at least allow customers choose when they might want to take the gamble on losing functionality of their devices and have to waste time trying to fix it.
Sorry to say it, but this episode has reinforced the view that Pogoplug is a nerd's toy, rather than a mass market device (and yes, I'm including myself in that description). Would Apple ever issue a firmware update which screwed an important element of functionality in any of their products? Well, ok it's not impossible, but if it did happen, those responsible for the ****-up would be hung out to dry!
Hey - I'm a dev myself (nerd) so I do have some sympathy . . .
but - Sod's law states - "what can go wrong will go wrong".
Given this fact of life - why isn't there a path for us nerds to downgrade ? - then they can fix this problem without the added pressure of dealing with angry emails and forum posts.
I read somewhere that pogoplug say something like "well Microsoft push updates so it is standard practice" - well actually Microsoft still give users the option to disable or approve automatic updates - and then they also provide a rollback point.
I hope some major lessons are being learned.
I absolutely agree - it's the compulsory aspect of the updates which is causing the problem. If there was a "roll back" option then the techies could solve the problem without undue pressure from angry Pogoplug users....
Have to agree with ^^^^^^
But I would rather have a nerd toy than a mass market device. Which is why I'll never own an iphone.
There really should be a way for us to downgrade, because as it stands, my pogoplug is next to worthless. I understand having a baseline firmware makes support easier for you, but SURELY this is a special case. You are not providing support here.
The other example I can think of with firmware upgrades is Sky. I think they push upgrades without permission, but I suppose they can test their firmware more easily, as there is less external hardware to interface to a Sky box.
Graeme said: There really should be a way for us to downgrade, because as it stands, my pogoplug is next to worthless.
Yep, I've seriously thought about putting mine on ebay, and I've only had it a couple of weeks.
As I see it, the device is mainly about media sharing, but there are enough drawbacks on that front to make you wonder whether it is worthwhile. The quality of still images is downgraded in the web browser to such an extent that you may have second thoughts about whether you really do want to share them. You have no control over the quality (although this may change with future firmware upgrades).
Another thing which I've noticed: if you simultaneously invite several friends to look at some images, your broadband connection slows up significantly as they all try to get access to your hard drive attached to your Pogoplug at the same time. As for movies, unless you and your friends all have superfast broadband, they have to be heavily downgraded in quality to make sharing possible. And the need to transcode your movies to mp4 is just a pain. And you can't back up media from your PS3 to a Pogoplug / hdd etc etc etc
Yeah, it is a worthless box now. My active copy isn't even working now. Which causes ppsync to run at high CPU usage all the time. It would seem that they should roll out the previous version until they get a solid update fixed.
What could the update have fixed that would cause it to be better than the problems it created. Rolling back firmware is never fun, but sometimes it's just necessary.
I agree. This transcoding problem is very frustrating. The suggested workaround implies that you are sitting nest to the drive and you see the activity ... not really useful if you are traveling and trying to access the Pogo while you are away (and your Pogo is burning up the dirve motors of the attached 2TB drives busily transcoding files you expressly asked NOT TO TRANSCODE)
Yeah. I can't share videos with friends in a real way. They're gonna have to download the WHOLE FILE before watching, and downloading is slow... Add that on top of me not getting a firmware update (actually now that I've read all this I'm GLAD that I DIDN'T get an update)
Well this is all a little embarrasing for Pogoplug.
Somehow i don't think i'll be voting for Pogoplug in the Mashable Awards as adverstised on the home page.
Ahhh the irony.
