I have a seagate Dockstar , which has never been activated on the internet.

but it is connected to my home network and i can access it from all computers at

home, using a special .ceid file . This method is posted on Crunchgear.com.

My Question is if Pogoplug can be used in a similar manner without internet

access? i am sure some guru here might provide us a way.

Thanks

Kris Raghu

This is the method described in Crunchgear for Dockstar.
Plug your USB drive into your computer, format it (preferably with NTFS) and
create a file on it named .ceid

Using notepad, or your favorite text editor, put these lines in the file
(replacing yoursharename with a name of your own choosing). Note the mode=rw
allows reading and writing.

servicename=yoursharename
xcode.metadata=never
xcode.thumbnail=never
xcode.stream=never
cifs.mode=rw

Plug the usb drive into the Dockstar, and you're all set. The drive will be
available as
\\fadsMMMMMM\yoursharename (where MMMMMM are the last 6 letters and numbers
of the Dockstar's mac address, which is on the label on the bottom).

CAN SOMEONE PROVIDE A SIMILAR METHOD FOR POGOPLUG??

@Kris - there is no similar method for the Pogoplug - it does not support samba, so you cannot use it without an Internet connection

Any plans for future samba support built-in to the Pogoplug - without having to "hack" it? I've got a Dockstar and I find for my needs it is much easier to map a drive especially from Linux(also Windows 7) using the samba method. I use it primarily for backup purposes and only access it locally most of the time. Of course when away, I use the app to map drives.

I'm not averse to tinkering with adding third-party samba support to my Pogoplug, but what support options are there if it gets "bricked"?

@Jon.QA

If you provide Samba support , we will be free from that flaky Windows Drive Application and you will see complaints from your users come down a lot.

Anyway, why cant you provide support for Samba??
You are doing it with Seagate Dockstar, and it seems to
be doing a great job. A thousand times better than the Drive Application
you have now.

Bit of a late reply, but I have enabled Samba on my Pogoplug using the following instructions, works great!...
