If my external hard drive is connected to a PogoPlug can I only access it from the internet? and not from my PC that I installed the software on?

If my external HDD is connected to the pogoplug and not my pc surely the speeds would be a lot slower than if it was directly connected to the PC?

I hope this makes sense!

Thank you,

Jack

The pogoplug apps are able to sense whether you are connected to the home network or remotely.

If your pc (PC/laptop/phone) is connected by wireless or wire to the same network LAN as your pogoplug then data will be streamed directly over the network. The USB connection will limit the maximum data transfer speed.

If you are away from the home network then data will be streamed via pogoplug servers over the internet. The internet route is slower, especially so if uploading, as most ISP's provide a faster download speed than upload.

Remember, its not what life does to you, but what you do with what life does to you, that matters.

This is how the PogoPlug has been designed to operate, as is explained in the readily available sales and marketing information. In that way, your files can be access from anywhere on your local network\domain as well as across the internet. Attaching the drive to your local workstation would completely defeat the purpose of the PogoPlug device.

Now, if you would like to make moving files from your PC faster, simply disconnect the drive from the PogoPlug, plug it into an available USB port on your computer, then copy the files to the drive. Once you have completed, return the drive to the Pogoplug. If any of the files were videos, make sure to mark them for transcoding. I do this when I have lots of stuff to move to the drive and it works great.

If you really believe that you need your drive physically attached to your computer all of the time, then the PogoPlug is not right for you and I'd suggest that you look at using Opera Unite. Personally, I'd rather not have my workstation exposed like that and I like that I can power my workstation down while the PogoPlug uses only a minuscule amount of power.

Thanks X... I was wondering if an external disk drive could have data on it first and then connected to PogoPlug... have a disk I want to set in a remote location for offsite backup with my 2nd Pogoplug and was not looking forward to the long time it would take to upload 150GB...

You can move an external hard drive back and forth from a computer to the Pogoplug without losing any data. It's common for folks to hook their HD up to their computer to transfer large or lots of files and then it back to their Pogoplug.

My Pogoplug and HD are disguised as more garage junk no burglar would bother with. It might be slow initially getting set up, but if the bad guys come and rip off all my computers, TVs, Cameras, etc., I will still have all of my data, as well as plenty of photos of the bad guys. That's the plan anyway...
