Hi,

I would like to know which way we would get faster transfer speed on LAN.

1. Mount pogoplug using the provided app

2. plugapps and install samba

What's the advantage/disadvantage between these two? They seem to be the same to me..

Thanks.

If you are using gigabit ethernet, you are limited by the USB interface of the harddrive connected to the P/P (400Mb/s vs 1Gb/s) no matter what. In practical terms however, the provided app uses the same method to serve files as plugapps (i.e. samba). You can also enable samba in your vanilla P/P by going to settings and enabling WFS (windows file sharing). The app is much more limited in terms of configuration than the plugapps version, but it doesn't require any changes to be able to access your files directly over your LAN. Use the app only if you care about having the P/P auto-mounted as a local drive.

As a point of clarification, I have a Popgoplug V2 and a Seagate Dockstar. The Pogoplug does not have the built-in Samba(no WFS option). The Dockstar does have this option. I do not use the Pogoplug app when on my local network as it makes life easier just mapping the drives on the Dockstar(allows you to pick drive letters). It also makes it easier to mount a Dockstar drive as a CIFS share from my Linux machine. I have been hoping the Pogoplug will pick up this ability without having to go the third-party route and potentially bricking the device.

Sorry maybe my initial question wasn't clear..

I already have samba 3 running on my pogoplug. What I want to know is which way would be faster because different approach of transmissions usually have different overhead (either on cpu load/ memory usage/ network traffic overhead).

Thanks.
