Are there any future plans to bring a FTP option onto the pogoplug? It would be handy to back up my web site FTP to FTP instead of having to download manually a large file. :)

There are no plans to add FTP to the Pogoplug - can you describe what you're trying to do in a little more detail? While we may not add that specific protocol, the use case seems sound so I'd like to get a sense of what you're trying to do.

Well at present I run a web site on a shared server which uses cpanel as the back-end management. Through cpanel it can back up all the files on the server to it's home directory or to a remote FTP. (see picture)

The pogoplug would be ideal if it had a feature that supported that as it's handier to leave the pogoplug on downloading rather than my computer.

I also would be thrilled to see ftp protocol added to the Pogoplug.

My use case:

I live in a rural area where the only ISP is via satellite which limits upload bandwidth to a tiny allowance each month. Because of this, I cannot allow my IP camera to ftp its images to a server on the internet without quickly exceeding my upload bandwidth limit.

However, if a Pogoplug allowed ftp then I could send the images from the cameras to the pogoplug over the local network. And with the soon-to-be-released Pogoplug wireless adapter I could even hide the Pogoplug somewhere out of sight of thieves!

Sure, I could leave my desktop PC turned on while away from the house and store images to its HDD but a Pogoplug can be hidden, uses way less electricity than a PC, and has many other uses as well.

Thanks.

Openpogo has a package vsftpd which is what you're looking for I think. You'd have to do a little work to get openpogo running, but it's not hard, and the extended features are worth the trouble. Be mindful of warranty concerns regarding modifying your P/P however.

Another vote for FTP server on pogo.

Use case: FTP server that will allow me to load code onto routers and switches as well as act as a backup source for ftp'ing configurations from routers to the plug.

Change it to SFTP and I'm on board as well.

i guess Jon.QA died or got fired!! Great support!!

Yes actually, Jon.QA left the Pogoplug team at the end of September. He sent out an email to the beta testers to let us know that he was leaving.

PureFTPD can be loaded onto the Pogoplug, either as an Optware package, or Plugbox Linux complete Linux replacement. For SFTP use openssh-sftp-server. Yes vsftpd is available on Optware (same as Openpogo but continually updated).

List is:

vsftpd - 2.3.2-1 - ftp daemon with an emphasis on speed and security
bftpd - 3.1-1 - bftpd is a very configurable Linux FTP server which can do chroot without special configuration or directory preparation.
ftpd-topfield - 0.7.7-0 - FTPD for the Topfield TF5000PVRt
proftpd - 1.3.3c-1 - Highly configurable FTP server with SSL-TLS
pure-ftpd - 1.0.29-1 - A free (BSD), secure, production-quality and standard-conformant FTP server.
stupid-ftpd - 1.5beta-1 - FTP server with ftp-daemon functionality and a command-line mode.
tnftpd - 20100324-1 - tnftpd (formerly lukemftpd) is a port of the NetBSD FTP server to other systems.
vsftpd - 2.3.2-1 - ftp daemon with an emphasis on speed and security
openssh-sftp-server - 5.5p1-1 - sftp-server only from a FREE version of the SSH protocol suite of network connectivity tools.

My first take on pogoplug was that it was essentially an http replacement for and ftp server which the average person doesn't understand. It would be nice if it also natively responded to the ftp protocol as well.

I just bought pogoplug today. Now i find out ftp is not a function of the device. I need ftp, but since this is not available, I am returning the device to where i bought it. Ftp option is mandatory for my uses.

I have a Foscam wireless IP camera. It can output snapshot JPG's to FTP or SMTP. I'd like to run the Pogoplug as a straight FTP server to capture these images. Is this sort of use possible?

March 5, 2011 7:13 PM

I do the same thing with a cisco linksys wireless IP camera. I use pure-ftpd. I also use a cron script to clean up and rename the images and with rsync, posts it to the web server.

March 24, 2011 2:53 PM

Yes I have the same need here. Would like my linksys cameras to ftp the video files to the pogoplug. Pretty important feature.

This is happening on our home wifi network so it does not expose any real security threat.

Pls add this feature

Thanks

Please add FTP support as my business needs it to add the ability for our clients to access our files without having to lose credabilty in having pogoplug branding.

it would be nice to have the ability to map files.mycompanydomain.com to your own branded pogoplug software. That or create a google apps application where you could have single sign on and manage users and what files they have access to.

It would also be great to have the ftp option be like ftp.cloud.mycompanydomain.com so that you could point the DNS or cname records of a subdomain to the location of your pogoplug. You of course could not have it be ftp.mycompanydomain.com because your web server needs to host your website and changing dns or cname records of your main domain would not work.

This type of addition would be great for an enterprise type version and I would be willing to pay a monthly fee in order to get everything connecting without installing proprietary software or going to websites in order to access files.

@ Scott111 - The Pogoplug Biz allows you to map your domain and remove the Pogoplug branding.

JJ said: @ Scott111 - The Pogoplug Biz allows you to map your domain and remove the Pogoplug branding.

So I went out and bought the biz version expecting a system that would solve the file sharing issues our company has without spending a ton of money. All of this while portraying the image that we have a great IT department with a customized file sharing system.

I was sold on the fact that you could "map" your domain which for us was going to be media.____.com to our own private branded file sharing system. Unfortunately after spending $280 I come to find out that mapping according to @JJ is a redirect. After you type in your domain it then redirects you to the my.pogoplug.com crap which looks highly unprofessional.

Regardless of how much customization you can do to the interface, if it still contains the words "pogoplug" in the url it will completely flush any other efforts down the drain. If I wanted "mapping" and still have the pogoplug branding (in the url) I would have just bought a regular one on ebay for $50 and then put in a redirect within an html file hosted on media._____.com and essentially accomplished the same thing.

Unless I have overlooked something here, it looks like I will be returning this "biz" unit.

April 9, 2011 1:45 AM

OK so I fixed the url issue but it still has WAY too many pogoplug references for my business. Any plans to make this system more like google apps. I just want a clean simple interface without asking my users to sign up for a pogoplug account or displaying links for them to visit the pogoplug community website. I would not mind paying some minimal fee to have this thing just swiped completely of all branding whatsoever. I think that would be a great enterprise business model for a little SaaS income. If you could take that and link it up with google apps for enterprise file storage and sharing I think you would have a blockbuster product.

April 9, 2011 1:38 PM updated: April 9, 2011 1:43 PM

@Scott111, I know the difference between domain mapping and domain forwarding. If you go directly to the pogoplug biz description on pogoplug.com, it says, "Customize the look and feel of the Pogoplug interface, including the color, logo, domain name and background image." If all you wanted to do was forward your domain, like you said, you wouldn't even need a Biz model...you could do that through your domain host.

Now, as for this comment: "I would not mind paying some minimal fee to have this thing just swiped completely of all branding whatsoever." - Agreed. When the Biz first came out, this is exactly what it was (with the exception of a VERY small "powered by Pogoplug" icon at the very bottom)...which is why it's such an appealing product for business owners. However, since the recent redesign of the web interface, this has changed. The Pogoplug/Cloud Engine branding is everywhere. And as for the "minimal fee", you pay an extra $250 for the Biz model (Biz=$300, Pro=$50 at Best Buy)...this should be enough overhead to remove the branding permanently in my opinion.

From what I've seen of the project managers/developers over at Pogoplug, they will likely address this issue soon. I think they are so swamped right now with Pogoplug Video issues that they just don't have the time to deal with the Biz problems right now. Once they've made a little headway with the Video stuff, I think (and hope) they will give us what we want. I have a lot of faith in this company and product. I think they're experiencing some growing pains at the moment...but hopefully that will be over soon enough.

April 9, 2011 7:40 PM

Unfortunately, we don't have time to wait on the goodwill of a company to make the changes for features that were promised when this product was launched. Thank you for pointing out the fact that I paid $250 extra for the only feature that I wanted but was taken away when the new interface was designed.

Hello again Best Buy and hello TonidoPlug.

I don't see why they dont just add the FTP function. Obviously the plug is running some flavor of Linux and I can't see how hard it will be.

November 15, 2011 6:24 PM

I went to CloudFTP but if someone explain me how to do this it will be great!

January 28, 2012 9:52 AM

would like the same, ftp to pogoplug hard drive to back up website from C panel
