Well I was supposed to get a free wifi adapter but in their email that I just received they said it would cost $29.00 plus shipping....no way...
Categories: Pogoplug v1, v2, and PRO
Don't get me wrong, I love my Pogoplug and appreciate the offer for a 'free' wireless adapter since I bought my Pogoplug before the cutoff date.
However...$14 for UPS ground shipping to California for something the size of a USB flash drive seems kind of crazy.
Cloud Engines is only 60 miles from my home in Northern CA, but even if thay're shipping from New York to CA, UPS website shows a price of $8.88.
What's up here? Inflated shipping cost to offset some of the 'freeness'?
Rant complete...

barnwellm,
I'm only griping about the shipping cost.
If you followed the sign-up instructions to get your 'free' WiFi (and qualified based on when you purchased) you use the coupon code from the subject line of the support reply at checkout and get a discount of $29 off of the $29 price.
If you haven't gotten the reply from PogoPlug with the coupon code, be patient because it looks like they have to handle each one individually like a support request.

Oops.....appreciate the response and I guess I just read the email wrong....thank you for putting me on the right path....
I agree, shipping is a rip off.
Anyone from PogoPlug care to give us loyal users a free shipping coupon as well.
Really, *free* should be FREE!
Thx,
tom
Now i do feel better...I got a better deal than hbear....my shipping costs were only $12.00......:):)
There are other costs associated with "shipping" an item beyond the actual cost of the carrier charge. The packaging costs money, printing the shipping labels costs money, and paying someone to fulfill all the "free orders" costs money. The 'H' in S&H is actually a lot more involved than most people realize. The carrier is only half the charge of S&H. The indirect costs (i.e. not listed above) alone are also very high.
So, if you take that $8.88 and subtract it from $14, you get $5.12. If you figure a guy being paid $15/hr to package the items takes roughly 7.5 minutes to fully package, seal, label, and place the usb stick, that's almost $2. That leaves just over $3 to pay for the box, packing materials, tape, and labeling.
I don't know about you, but that sounds like a good deal to me. Of course, if you're that *unhappy* over the extra $5, you could always drive to Best buy, Walmart, or wherever and spend $60 on one. Then again, you'd probably spend that $5 you're worried about just in gas.
If you're only 60 miles from there, and had a reasonable vehicle, you could always just drive there and save a few bucks. 20mi/gal @ $3.00/gal x 60mi = $9 + *your time*. It's less than $14, but how much is that 2-3 hours of driving worth to you?
Of course if you count travel in both directions it's $18 in gas with that formula... I guess $14 doesn't seem so unreasonable, does it?
Who are you @DarkKnight ???
Obviously you aren't in this forum for the little guy, don't you want there to be free shipping? The point is, they are basically saying existing Pogo users get it for free, which is a half truth.
most other companies are cool about it and can do shipping for free, they also have to deal with handling, etc.
$14 is almost half as much as the wifi adapter, ridiculous.
Can you even get a Wifi adapter at Best Buy, etc for the POGO? No.
Thanks for replying,
I completely understand that there are "H" costs...and I'm not even really unhappy about paying the $14.
For me, it's a matter of principle.
My example of $8.88 is for an individual making one shipment. Companies that ship a lot of stuff (including, I assume, PogoPlog) can get substantially lower rates, meaning that the charge for "H" is probably accounts for more than half of the S&H fee.
Do these actually need a box to get taped up? Unless it's way over-packaged (which I guess is still too common these days) it should be able to slip into a padded envelope.
A quick search around the 'net for USB plug-in type items like flash drives etc. consistently show shipping charges from $5-$8 from companies both large and small.
This makes it appear that charges for S&H are going beyond real costs and padding the bottom line. If the H costs really are that high, I would suggest that the company hire a consultant to look into ways to streamline that business process.
Your driving cost example doesn't really apply to me, as I frequently drive right by BB, Wal-Mart, and even into San Francisco frequently for other business.
Yes, if there was a way to pick the item up in SF, I would have stopped by on my next trip through, but I doubt they're set up for drop-ins.
Again, I appreciate the fact that they're offering the free item in the first place...something they did not have to do. It's just surprising how out-of-step the shipping charges seem to be when compared to other online vendors.
Not "*unhappy*" just amazed,
hbear
I have to agree with hbear - I too live close to San Francisco; and while I understand the "H" costs, I have two PogoPlugs that qualify for the "free" wireless adapter. My gripe is that I have to pay the $11.99 for each one. I can't get them bundled together in one shipment.
I too, am not unhappy, just confused...
Highness
Well, if they aren't bundling, that does seem quite like a padding charge rather than a packing charge, which is a bit unfair. I could understand something like $10 (for example) for the first one plus $1 for each extra one due to weight or whatever, but clearly that isn't the case here.
Sorry C/E, you're on your own to justify that one. Why are you overcharging folks?
I also feel the S/H is over charged... a N adapter when on sale only cost less than $10 bucks...
Yeah, I think this wasn't handled very well. The shipping expense notwithstanding, I think it was pretty limited that one had to
A) HEAR somewhere that there was a new wireless adaptor and get to the website and sign up, and then
B) Get the code back from pogoplug and submit it and complete the order within all within LESS than 12 days?
I got the code, but didn't notice that they would ALL expire on aug 31, 2010. Most likely an accounting/finance booking issue more than anything else.
Personally, I received NO email to my pogoplug email address that said anything about this free promo, it was only that I read it somewhere and the made the submission, but if one DIDN'T read the email response thoroughly, one wouldn't have know that they most likely had less than 10 days to perform the coupon submission.
Personally, I was OUT OF THE COUNTRY and didn't want to use my credit card anywhere over wifi, just to get the dongle for free.
Aw, darn... I started the procedure, but then realized I didn't have money to pay the S&H charge. Then I kept forgetting about it.
So I guess I'm outta luck?! Darn!
I didn't get in on the free adapter since I just purchased my unit but I to choked down the final cost of the adapter for the PP at $45!! This is insane but I was stupid enough to pay it because I wanted the functionality. Then of course a week later they come out with the sexy black PP box with built in wifi GAH!!
