Just heard about Pogoplug today and am wondering if it can do the following before I buy it.

I'm a photographer and store my photos on a 1 Tb external Firewire drive, connected to my home Mac. I catalog my photos in Adobe Lightroom 3. Most of my photos are 20Mb+ in size. This particular drive is nearly full so let's say 40,000 Raw photos in one Lightroom catalog.

Sometimes when I am away from home on a trip I need to sell a photo but can't because I don't travel with all my photos.

If I hook up the drive to Pogoplug and put the Lightroom catalog on my Windows netbook would I be able to access the photos through Lightroom on my netbook when I am away?

It's no good for me just accessing the drive through a Finder window because I would never be able to find the photo I was looking for without the catalog names. Plus I usually need to edit a photo before sending it to a client.

Would this be very slow to do? I.e. to access a photo is my netbook connecting to my external drive via a Pogoplug server or does the Pogoplug server cache a copy of everything?

Thanks for your help.

I have done this with Lightroom 3 and it does work. Clearly, it does slow things down so do not expect to be editing your photos over a slow connection without a lot of patience. For the most part, Lightroom will only read the files if it does not have cached images.

Alternatively, exporting the pictures in your catalog as jpgs and putting those on a PogoPlug folder alows you to view them online. You can then pick which ones you want to download at a full resolution to work on or sell.

I have found that using pogoplug folders shared with clients as a pretty good way of showcasing my work. As part of my Lightroom workflow, I will export the top rated edited photos at a lower resolution (and often watermarked) to a folder that is then shared to whoever I want.

Hi Macgabe,
Did you manage to connect Pogoplug and Lightroom in a useful way?
