Any luck with this? I just bought the pogoplug exclusively for this purpose. I wanted to be able to access my shared quickbooks file from any wireless location? Appreciate any insight on setup... Thanks!

I'm trying to use Pogoplug on a secured share with Quickbooks Pro 2010. I placed the company files on my Pogo share, and I get "Can't open file" errors (-6000 and -6177 from their Quickbooks Connection Diagnostic Tool) when trying to open it. I'm logged in as the administrator. I can easily copy and write files to the share from the client, but Quickbooks Pro 2010 just can't open the company files. The error also says "You need a share with Read/Write/Change permissions.."
From the logs

Can someone fix this bug please? You can get a free 30-day copy of quickbooks for testing and resolution from quickbooks.com

I just bought pogoplug exclusively for Quickbooks. I thought I would be able to load Quickbooks 2011 on my pogoplug so that me or my bookkeeper can can use it from anywhere...
Should I download the program on my external hard drive attached to my pogoplug? If so... i'm assuming that I dont have to select that the program is being run on multiple computers and i can choose only that computer (external hard drive)
Anyone share any insight for set-up with this would be MUCH APPRECIATED!
THANKS!
Pogoplug won't work with Quickbooks. You would have to download the QB company files from the Pogoplug share first to your local hard drive to use it. I hope they fix this
I am having the same problem... Jeff- Did you have any luck figuring it out? Does anyone have any insight?? Thx
I am having the same problem too - with 2007 and 2009 versions of QB as well.
Quickbooks is not recognizing the drive as an actual "share" in terms on UNC paths aka Samba or SMB which is the Windows file sharing protocol. Because of this, it is attempting to open the files as a local access, which was not designed to used by multiple users at once.
Barring Cloud Engines building Samba services into the firmware, this is *not* a safe, nor appropriate use for sharing Quickbooks data files.
That is totally incorrect. QB does not use a UNC share, but is looking for a local drive, which Pogoplug claims to provide. Please fix this bug.
Quick question, here at Microsoft we use NetMon to watch the network traffic over the wire. What similar research have you done regarding this issue?

While I understand fully, my comment regarding the improper use of sharing is from knowledge of the underpinning behaviors of the Quickbooks database system. I have been a systems engineer and admin for neigh a decade, and have seen many times where people do not understand the distinction between local and shared in this aspect.
If the pogoplug were to provide full local disk compatability, quickbooks would likely not see this issue, however, in such an event I strongly recommend not having more than one user opening Quickbooks at any given time.
What I was trying to make a point of regarding the UNC share is: a UNC share is the appropriate, documented and supported method according to the makers of Quickbooks and all related documentation regarding shared data usage.
Yes, Plzzzzz fix this problem. It is the sole reason I purchased PogoPlug!!!
You have misunderstood my intended use. I am not setting up a multi-user environment. I have Quickbooks running locally here. Of course it supports the local file system. And it supports a UNC file share. But I am NOT SHARING. I am hoping to use QB as a SINGLE USER via PogoPlug, so I can use QB from where ever I am. I want to use QB from my home desktop, then again, only by me, using my laptop, when I am at work. SINGLE USER, one user at a time. Never would two users open it at the same time. Only me. Just myself. Single user, from home, from work, or where ever I can access the PogoPlug drive. Fix this.
The issue I believe is that the quickbooks file needs to be synced to a directory on the local computer that is running Quickbooks.
I am not sure if Pogoplug will do this. I use Dropbox in this exact way with my quickbooks and it works file but the key is the QB file has to be located either on the local machine. Dropbox then syncs the file to the cloud once I have closed the file.
Quickbooks needs immediate access to the database file. Any delay would cause an error in opening the file.
I hope this helps.
I am in the same situation as Sirfnusa posted above.
Are we going to fix the problem or what....
Again, this is the sole reason I purchased the PogoPlug!
I'm in need of the same QB file share access functionality. I'm returning the Pogoplug and buying it when and if it's work for QB.
A new product from My Docs Online can meet this need.
Here's a post with a video showing how it works:

Here's a FAQ entry on the same topic:
http://faq.mydocsonline.com/299/how-to-use-file-locking-with-quickbooks/
That would be the same as copying the files from my Pogoplug share locally, then copying back to the share when done. This is not the solution I am looking for. And I don't need to lock the file for single use. I am the only person who will EVER be using it. It should just work on the Pogoplug share from where ever I connect. I posted the network errors that I received, and the pogoplug development team apparently has decided not to address the bug.
I must, unfortunately, use QB. To resolve the multiUser and singleUser problem along with mobility, I put the dataFile on a USB drive. I have a five (5) user QB license (Accountant version being used) so that each computer has its own software and the software is continually updated so that all of them are on the same release.
I also have a computer on the network that has a shared file. When I am in the office, I move the QB data to the shared file on the network. Then I can access the file from QB from which ever computer happens to be available.
QB is not really multiUser software (one writer per company and in some arrangements up-to license allowed readers in other parts of the data where the writer is not locking) even through the 2011 version (this excludes the Enterprise version). It is software that can access, one-at-a-time, a dataFile that must "seem" to be on the local computer (mapped).
This seems to work most of the time though QB does complain sometimes. When doing this it is pertinent to use the "verify" and the "backup" frequently to make sure the QB data file (there are also two companion files) does not become corrupt.
We are upgrading to 2011. I am wondering if what is being done (share, USB, network, etc.) will continue to work. Guess I will soon learn. I am betting on the USB "flash" drive being the easiest, and slowest, solution at the onSet which will give time to futz with making the process work like it has with prior QB versions.
I am wondering if the Plug is a viable solution when using the singleUser version of QB. At one time, I understand that, there was a network version that was a little more lenient to propagation delays and other "noise" that are prevalent on the internet.
I do not recall reading, in this thread, about anyone making contact with Intuit regarding how best to handle putting QB manipulated data on a server (since the Pogoplug is such a device) and accessing it from various locations. Intuit may have a version of QB that works better, in this case, than the software from the retail box.
Pogoplug Farming(tm) is Fun!

It's unfortunate that you are using QB as the benchmark for PP being a useful product. Our accounting office has 6 different networked apps that we use consistently, and all work exactly as they are supposed to, except QB. It is a POS. Mulituser access is a joke so we never even use that, and it can barely handle having files stored on a network drive without occasional errors and hiccups, even with their database manager. I actually considered training all of our staff on how to move QB files from the server to the local drive before opening QB, so that they would all use company files locally only, due to so many problems... close to 20 hours spent with QB support fooling around with windows firewall opening ports, etc... I would never attempt to store a QB file on anything other than a local or network drive, other than to move it off PP, use it locally, then put it back on PP when I was done.
We would never use QuickBooks at all if it wasn't so pervasive in its market penetration. My most hated software app of all time, ICKBOOKS. If you must have your data stored somewhere else, you probably should be using the online version of QB, where all your data is on their servers.
Gave up trying to get Pogoplug working with QB files. Using DropBox shared folders instead.

Seems to work for multiple users accessing same shared folder on DropBox. My account and bookkeeper are accessing the same QB files in the shared folder, although not simultaneously, and I can use the files when they're done.
