i actually like it in the pink. it gets others to notice it and ask about it so i have an opportunity to spread the pogoplug story with them. besides, its a piece of equipment, it doesnt make you any less of a man to have something pink.

I am sure I must be missing something, so please help...
Please tell me where I can purchase the $99.00 consumer (not $300 business) version of the pogoplug that is NOT in that awful, stupid, garish pink.
I doubt if this company is short sighted enough to make a this product ONLY in that garish pink!
Hi Byrdman -
First, our profanity filter must have missed your thread title... I do try to keep things family friendly on the forums :) So I made a minor edit.
Paladin252 nailed it - I think the reason it's pink is to establish a unique brand and look, and I think they have done well with it. I am a manly man myself (I love meat, fast cars, video games, etc) and have no problem with the pink device in my setup, it's kinda cool actually next to all of the boring black boxes.
This has been a hotly contested topic in several threads on the forums, so you're definitely not alone. A lot of people who don't like the pink find a way to conceal it in a cabinet, desk, or what not - I guess it just boils down to personal preference.
The bottom line though - don't allow yourself to miss out on how cool the Pogoplug is just because of the color. If you really can't stand the pink, don't let it hold you back from enjoying one - just find a way to hide it and I think you'll be thankful you gave it a try!
*sigh* I'll bite. I agree with you Byrdman, it is indeed often used on network TV. I also agree, however, that some people are deeply offended by much of what is on network TV for that reason. (Not me personally, really, but I very much respect those who are.)
Which is why I starred out the word - at least out of the thread title. I really don't like doing that kind of stuff (we're all adults here) but I also try to keep everybody happy if I can :)
Do you work in the PR department?! It's a HUGE deal if you are a potential customer. Lots of people walk away from this product based purely on its design. Steve Jobs began the process of resurrecting Apple with the colored iMac. Design is a big deal in computers.
craig42a said: Pink is punk rock! That's why. Besides, it's actually fuchsia. What a useless reply.
I too did notice the rather uncomely color pink, but I should come to love it only if the Pogoplug live up to its claims...
So far the only dissapointment is the S L O W... conversion of media...
Question: Why does this device need to transcode (already) transcoded MP4 files?
@byrdman you can't compare an imac and the pogoplug; the imac is a desktop computer so of course it would look ridiculous in an office setting if it was bright pink. But we're not talking about an imac, we're talking about a device that you plug in and leave alone in a hidden spot somewhere. I don't have my pogoplug on show just like I don't have my wireless router on show...it's only there to serve its purpose. No, I don't work in the PR department...I work in an IT department where we actually use computers for the purpose that they were created...not the color off the shell that they're in. I guess I'm more concerned with practicality and functionality than visual appeal. To each his own.
Cottoncandy pink, Highway yellow, safety orange, bright fluorescent green .. Any number of them would have been better ;)
Just kidding, I really would prefer something more muted and mainstream.
Is there a guide to take it apart? As I would prefer to paint it, if it going to be visible on the bookshelf.
I took mine apart. The "pink" thing snaps off the front of the unit. My intention was to screw the unit to the side of an external HD. I saw a couple of small circuit boards inside, and decided to just let well enough alone, and snap it back together. I don't object to the "Apple-pink-modern" look so much as I find that the unit seems a bit flimsy. Not that this is a problem. As one user noted, it is meant to be tucked away out of sight. I am, in fact, extremely satisfied with the little guy.
I have easily pried the pink plastic off of the unit. I spray painted it with Krylon (chocolate brown, thank you) and now it harmonizes with my tasteful decor!
A super-easy fix that my 7-year-old loved to "help" me with!

Byrdman, You're quite the people person, aren't you!?
OK, try this answer on for size: The golfer on the PGA tour with the longest average drive is Bubba Watson. He consistently hits drives over 400 yards! How's that for manly? By the way, Bubba always uses a driver with a pink shaft.

Form follows function and the PP functions very well.

for the record, im a manly man, i have a 67 mustang, salad is what is eaten by the things i eat, and i never liked baywatch for the storylines.
Nice job Micah.
However, users should not have to disassemble their newly purchased product. Nor should they have purchase spray paint and tools, put their product back together and hope they didn't damage something.
The frustrating thing about the company is their decision to ignore users and potential customers. They are not dumb or deaf. However after investing thousands (if not more) into the PogoPlugs parts they are not going change even if it's the right thing to do. At least not until the inventory is depleted.
This decision has cost them countless potential customers. People have every intention of making the purchase and lose interest at sight of the hot pink.
Just imagine if Apple choose to make all iPhones hot pink. It would still sell, but not nearly as many and the complaints would be rampant.
The fact that a customer would purchase this product then disassemble it, paint it, reassemble it, take a picture of it, go to the company's forums, write a post, share his picture and written tutorial on how he altered it, says VOLUMES about what many people feel about this ridiculous color decision...

Byrdman,
1. Users do not have to disassemble their product, Micah chose to.
2. Users do not have to purchase paint and tools, Micah chose to.
3. Pogoplug chose a color scheme for a unique product identity. If, in the course of product research, a PP customer didn't notice that the product includes some pink colored parts, I'd like to know what they were looking at. Decide if the color is a deal-breaker before making your purchase rather than bitching about it afterwards.
4. If the color bothers you so much, don't buy it in the first place or buy the drab and boring Seagate Dockstar instead.
5. The corrolation between iPhones and the PP is ridiculous. The iPhone is a personal, portable, hand-held device that is with the user most of the time, so it's appearance (to some) can be important (thus the popularity of skins and cases). The PP sits in a corner and is rarely seen. If you don't like the color of it, put it in a pretty box and get on with your life.
6. The fact that a customer would purchase this product then disassemble it, paint it, reassemble it, take a picture of it, go to the company's forums, write a post, share his picture and written tutorial on how he altered it, says VOLUMES about what a great product this is and the pride in ownership that many of it's customers have...

X I couldn't agree more! ... well said sir .... now let those who are staying get on with enjoying their pogoplug!
Remember, its not what life does to you, but what you do with what life does to you, that matters.
I think that my post was deleted due to cross posting. I should not have done that. I was trying to get the info out to as many as possible. Here is the thread that includes my tutorial on how to do a PogoPlug paint job: http://www.pogoplugged.com/forum/thread/12790/Pink-I-won-t-buy-it/

Well, well, well...
PogoPlugged finally woke up and smelled the (black) coffee! Or should I say gray coffee! :-) They released a gray version AND had a $45.00 to $50.00 online "fire sale." The results:
Buy.com - SOLD OUT (http://www.buy.com/prod/pogoplug-multimedia-sharing-device-pogo-e02g-gray/q/loc/101/216745874.html)
Amazon.com - SOLD OUT (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0044CL1N0/ref=oss_product) with NO PICTURE no less!!!
I picked up one from Amazon.com and the next day it was sold out even though Amazon and/or PogoPlugged Marketing failed to provide a picture of the product!!!
As expected PogoPlugged is not wasting the money they have already spent. When my PogoPlug arrived, it came in the same box as the original model, complete with a picture of the flaming Pink PogoPlug on the box. They just slapped a sticker on the box that says - GRAY VERSION! Hehe! Can't say I blame 'em!
It just goes to show you when you listen to your consumer AND provide a value to them you get high volume SALES.
Incidentally, the flaming pink version is still widely available online...
Now if they just improve the product and get rid of the need to use their web service, it will *really* be a big seller...
Happy PogoPluggin'!
