Hey AJ, I can't answer your question about where the previews are stored because I honestly don't know. However, I can tell you that it does not take long for the pogoplug to generate the previews. Of course, the time is probably dependant on the size of each picture, but the shots I take with my dslr camera are usually 3 to 4 megabytes each. I remember watching pogoplug generate previews when I added pictures and it did about 1 preview per second consistently.
Hi All,
I have thousands of images on my external HD which is connected to my Pogoplug device. I immediately stopped my Pogoplug trying to generate previews when I first set it up because I had so many images and it appeared to take forever. Now I am all setup with my pogoplug, I'm thinking about allowing it to generate previews of files, as I cannot view ANY images through my iPhone with the Pogoplug app, and also viewing images through the browser (even in the local network) is incredibly slow.
My question is this - where is preview data stored? On one of my external HDs or using the limited memory in the Pogoplug itself? And also, does anyone have any metrics as to how long it may take to generate preview data for roughly 500gb of data?
Many thanks in advance,
AJ
Hi JJ,
Thanks for the response. I bit the bullet and allowed Pogoplug to generate the previews. I monitored my HD disk space and could see that a few hundred mb were taking during the preview generation process, so I guess the previews are stored in a hidden folder on my HD.
Anyway, I left it running overnight and in the morning all my previews were complete. And I've got to say I'm so glad I let it - the browser interface and the iPhone app work so much better with the previews enabled. Photos were basically unviewable using the broswer interface (even when in the same network) before, and now I can happily view my photos on the go! :D
I would still be interested in the technical details behind the previews generated by Pogoplug, such as where they are stored (a lite database on the HD perhaps?). Maybe a Pogoplug employee will enlighten us.
Anyway, I'm happy, it's working great :)
