What factors into your decision to use full security?

It slows down transfer speed for access inside the local network with full security on because it forces all the data to go out to the Internet and back, whereas everything remains local when full security is not used.

Do you only use it when you have any type of information on your drive that you don't want to risk going public, and don't care much about transfer speed?  Or do you find that you have to use it because it doesn't work otherwise, with some particular operating systems?

well, that depends on your network speed and on the files on your pogo...
if you only have 18kb/s upload it makes no sense to use the SSL-session... i'm using my pogo as music-server, so transfer speed below 1MB/s arent enough in my case...
A possible alternative would be to use Plugapps with Samba3, this isnt interfered with the ssl-option on the web-settings... With this combination your files are safe on the net and fast in your local network...

Thanks, I'll check into the Samba3, that sounds like the best of both worlds. I'm presently forced to use the full security mode because the web app has problems loggin in without using htpps.

Is Samba something that is for local network access only? Still looking to set it up. So far it's been working acceptably well through the web interface, after putting it on a UPS so it never loses power.

if you do not open the network ports for samba acces, it is only for the local network... i totally forgot to write the howto... i think i can manage it in the following days, sorry :D
