You would have to SSH in and change the information in the smb.conf file to change the name.

I just got the dockstar pogoplug and have it connected to my home network. I'm going to be sharing the drive with many people across the network and wanted to give it a more appropriate name. Currently it has the default "FADS1AA3AD" as a computer name on the network. Is it possible to change this name? This default name isn't very descriptive.
Where does this name come from?

I have three devices on my LAN. Two are goflexnet and 1 is the Pogoplug v2 device.
The network browser (Windows or Mac) shows only fads26263c
And a media player I have only lists one device (the same as above) even though there are two others.
On my router, in the LAN clients list I see
| 172.14.44.104 | unknown | 00:10:75:26:26:3c | Dynamic |
There are two more "unknown" devices there too at ip .106 and .111, so I assume these are my other two pogoplug enabled devices.
Sooooo, why doesn't the browser or finder see the other two devices that are on my network? Is it possible that the missing "hostname" is causing problems?
My other devices have hostnames like this
| 102 | NP-C0C9DV009232 | 00:0d:4b:4b:a5:de | Dynamic |
which is a ROKU box, and another
| 108 | Apple-TV | 58:55:ca:21:e1:24 | Dynamic |
Which of course is an Apple-TV box.
Do you think the missing "name" is causing the devices to be missing from the list, even though they have that funky "fads26263c" name (it would help if that were also the device name on my lan client list).
Suggestion maybe? What if they had the pogoplug devices report their network name during DHCP so they would have something other than "unknown" -- maybe this would let the network browsers or browse masters properly announce these devices to others that want to use their services, like my Macbook, or my Network Media Player that will read from the pogoplug it sees just fine, but the other two, since it can't see them it can't stream from them.
Any thoughts?
Jeff
PS: If I issue this command in my Macbook safari browser
smb://172.14.44.104
It comes up with a prompt to enter a user name and password. (only on the seagate goflex net device, not on the pogoplug device which doesn't seem to respond, maybe the pogoplug needs a port number appended to the IP address)
Any idea what the user and pw is for the goflexnet device or the pogoplug device when accessing it this way? And what I might be able to do if I can access the device? Like fix the missing name?
The Pogoplug V2 doesn't come with WFS or Samba. You can't access it through your Network places or browser like the Seagate ones.
I don't have a Dockstar but you do have to turn on WFS in the settings to use as a share. You also need to turn on the Xbox/PS3 streaming for the Pogoplug to show up as a UPnP Media Server device.
Using it as UPnP Media Server device it will show you the name you have setup for your Pogoplug.
The name shown in your router settings should make no difference at all. If your router has the ability to assign a static address and name for your devices you could try that but it's shouldn't make any difference.

Brandon,
Very interesting. I had enabled WFS on my first Seagate, but forgot about it for the second. So now I enabled it for my second seagate.
I thought the pogoplug was like the seagate, but without the adapter for the goflex drive. Now I'm glad I got the Seagate device because it seems to offer both worlds, pogoplug sharing AND streaming content to my player.
Thanks for the quick (and accurate) response.
Jeff
