I've read several threads concerning the drive letter "issue" (i.e. not being able to actually assign a specific letter, and also PogoPlug always changing the drive letter everytime you restart the software), but I still can't wrap my head around how people are getting by this.

For me, the very principle of a NAS STARTS with the fact that the drive letter must remain persistant.

How else are you supposed to reference the drive in any application? It'll lose the path to the NAS the second you restart making any data for that application completely inaccessible.

For me, I purchased Pogoplug to share large photo libraries (family photos) between me and my wife so we can both load photos onto the same drive and sync, rather then having two split libraries on separate computers that are different.

It's all a wash because the drive letter changes all the time.

It's a shame, because everything else operates seamlessly, but without something as simple as drive letters, I can barely comprehend how people are using this as a true NAS, not just "some hard drive on the network" and just dragging files over to it like it's 2001.

i had an issue that is totally different but may solve your problem. i hooked up a usb hub and all the drives had the name of the manufacturer maxtor something. got pogoplug support and they basically told me to go on the website login and rename the drives based on looking at their content. i was able to do this and they now show up properly as named from the website page. hope this makes sense.

The issue is not that I'm not able to identify which drive is which. Right now that's not even a factor since I'm only using Pogoplug for one drive.

The problem is that any application that can store data in a user-defined path ( like iPhoto or Picasa for instance), recognizes the location using a directory path, which starts at the drive letter. If that drive letter changes, it doesn't matter what you name the drive, the application (like Picasa or iPhoto) will not be able to access it's data because it won't find the drive. It won't know that K:Storage is the same as R:Storage, etc. If Pogoplug assigns the drive K:, it has to remember that the drive is K: next time it reboots, which it does not.

Personally, I don't really even care if the drive letter is user definable or not. I just want it to STAY the same.

I dido Noah, I would think this is easily fixed but I'm not sure if the developers read these forums or if it's possibly on their radar to fix or update?

Maybe mine is weird, but as long as I turn off multi-drive mode, it just assigns to pogoplug to drive P: and makes all of the usb hard drives folders. So to have it work in MCE (for example) for movies, I assign it as P:\Movies\. For music I assign it as P:\Music. and so on. I don't know, maybe I just got lucky with drive letters. It only hops around drive letters when I put it in multi-drive mode.

Yeah, it appears you must uncheck multidrive mode...so that one drive letter is assigned, with each of your connected drives appearing as a folder under that drive letter.

If you still have problems with drive letters changing, do this (assuming you're using Windows):
In the Pogoplug App, uncheck "Automatically start..." and uncheck "Enable multi-drive mode"

Then, create a shortcut to the Pogoplug executable with a target of
"C:\Program Files\Pogoplug\ppfs.exe" -l P

Note that the vertical thing in -l is the letter 'L'
This forces it to use drive P every time (you can pick a different letter)

Then, put the shortcut in your Startup folder (or start it manually by double-clicking the shortcut).
