After a lot of frustration about this transcoding I decided to do my own experiment. We all know that the transcoding feature on the pogoplug is VERY SLOW and takes forever. One of the moderators on this board suggested Handbrake which I used but still took me about an hour to 2 hours to transcode a 45 min tv show.

Maybe it is because I am trying to trancode remotely I am in LA lets say and my pogoplug is in Chicago I am trying to run it thru handbrake that way and it takes forever.

So I started looking for other ways to do this and this is what I found

I used Super ---> www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

I used Bywifi ----> http://www.bywifi.com/help_transcode.html

1) You cant transcode remotely with Bywifi or Super it just takes way too long

2) I trancoded 3 things a. You tube clip about 50 seconds b. TV Show 45 min c. Full length movie 1hour and a half

All of my tests worked BUT you have to trancode to MP4 that is the only thing the Iphone will play. The file you are transcoding has to be on your computer or on the network you are on. You can transcode remotely if you are at home and your pogoplug is at home but not if you are in LA and it is in say Chicago.

It takes the iphone about 30 seconds to 45 seconds to start playing the video file. I had much better luck on wifi then on 3G as I expected to do so.

As far as speed Bywifi was by far faster then Super was by a long shot. Only thing about ByWifi is that there are ads at the top so you keep getting a message to stop running scripts or not you may or may not get this. I ran my antivirus afterwards just to make sure I didnt get anything installed I didnt want.

I hope that this helps all of us out here with Iphones that want to use this great pogoplug. I REALLY hope in the next update that the developers do something about this kinda like ORB or Tversity does (transcoding on the fly) because 3 hours to do one movie is crazy.

Also you have to do the normal settings in your media transcoding off, never or whatever blah blah blah seasoned pogoplug users will know what I mean

It would be helpful (very!) to get a step by step walk through of this (please?!)

@Kidjudge - I do something similar and I NEVER have to transcode using the PogoPlug. I take a DVD movie or a Divx video. I use HandBrake and load in my source DVD or Divx. The process takes as long as it takes to create a digital copy (which is perfectly legal). The resulting file is usually an MP4 or iTunes friendly M4v. It doesn't matter. I take the finished file and copy to my USB HD connected to the PogoPlug. Once I access my PogoPlug the videos are playable in their entirety. The PogoPlug transcoding process is terrible and the PogoPlug quality is unacceptable. What's the purpose of transcoding anyway with PogoPlug? It isn't necessary if you use HandBrake from the beginning.

My video is already MP4 or M4V and yet I still can't play it! Some of them I used Handbrake, some DVD2iTunes.

What am I doing wrong? Is it simply a matter of turning off transcoding option?

Customer support is worthless. They don't actually read my questions, they paste and cut a "convenient" answer. I've slammed this product on Amazon for that reason and will slam it every opportunity I get until they step up the customer service and help their customers understand how to get video working - as their advertising and promotional materials suggest it does.

I don't understand why people keep saying it is crazy to transcode a movie in 3 hours? Have they even examined the work involved in a true transcode? Do they realize that a typical movie will expand out (during transcoding) into 100-200 GB worth of video data? Do they have any conception of how much data that is and how silly it sounds to complain that the pogoplug can't transcode that much data in under 1 hour?
