What you are experiencing is not normal for the Pogoplug, and I'm sorry you've been having trouble. I am especially boggled by the internet connection maxout issue - that's one I haven't heard before.
Based on what you're saying, I think you're best off contacting Pogoplug official support as soon as you can, and they'll look into these issues. The sooner they know about this type of thing, the sooner they can address it!

I am a Mac user and bought a Pogo Plug because it looked like it had decent Mac support. I also bought it because I have 2 x 2TB external disks partitioned with HFS. Brilliant I thought with other NAS solutions I would have to format them as NTFS which meant moving my data around.
I have had serveral issues with my Pogoplug. Number 1 - when I installed the 2 external drives the Pogo plug killed them. I am just in the process of running Disk Warrior to see if I can get the data back.
When downloading files from the internet and my internet connection is maxed out I lose the drive mappings in Finder. The only time it returns is when the downloads finish. This is very annoying because other Mac users in the house cannot access the drive and I cannot presently download directly from the internet to the Pogoplug. It's stupid that the product relies on internet connectivity to allow internal file transfer.
So far very unimpressed with your product and looking to return it.
I have tried mounting the hard disk using sshfs manually but so far had not joy.
