The external USB drives I have spin themselves down when they're not in use. I can confirm that they do spin down when they're not being accessed. Please note that when you first connect a new drive all the indexing media transcoding (if enabled) takes a bit (if you have data on it). My drive didn't spin down for a few days. In summary USB drives whether attached to the Pogo or to my computer behave the same regarding spinning down.
