Hi,

Just a quick question... It appears that it take 2.5 times longer than the actual movie clip to transcode it, Is this correct?

With 1TB of movies this could take weeks and weeks?

Thanks

ok, so transcoding is still going since my last post a month ago... It still hasn't even gone a quarter of the way through the files so it is going to be a minimum of another two/three months... So that could be 4 months of transcoding 24/7 !!!
Hard drive and pogoplug are mega hot, working flat out and at this rate may die before transcoding is finished... Is this how long this process should take?

after transcoding, the files play perfectly but it is averaging 2-3 times longer to transcode a file that to watch it real time?

@Jamie - that is pretty much correct - the speed of transcode varies somewhat by the initial quality of the video (higher quality takes longer), but we've seen around 10 frames per second for a lot of media. As a lot of video is 24 frames per second, or 23.976 ;), it can take 2-3 times as long to transcode as it does to play. If you're worried about continuous, 24/7 transcoding, you could shut the process down for a bit - fastest way to do that would be to eject the drive and let it cool down, then plug it back in.

Bottom line here is if you have a 700 hrs of video, it'll take roughly 3 months to transcode. Hope that's helpful!

Excellent, so long as it's working correctly that's fine. I will give the drives a well earned rest as you suggest.
Once transcoded the streaming works perfectly, I watched a couple of items streamed through my iPhone onto my big screen last night.

Thanks
