I am trying to use a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium to access Pogoplug through a wireless router. After installing the desktop client, when I try to log-in, I get this message:

ERROR

There appears to be a problem with your network. Please check your network connection and click the Connect button to try again.

However, I have no problems using the same username and password to access my.pogoplug.com on this machine. At the same time, I also do not have any problems using the same version of the desktop client on another laptop (running Windows 7 Ultimate) to log-in.

Since both laptops are:

  • using the same version of the Pogoplug desktop client (ppdrive_win32_2_1_2.msi)
  • going through the same wireless router
  • going through the same DSL provider
  • having no problems accessing my.pogoplug.com directly

I don't understand why the above error makes any sense. Is there a compatibility problem or configuration problem unique to Windows 7 Home Premium? Any kind of help is appreciated.

Thanks!

PeterW, I would contact Pogoplug support to have them check this out.

I contacted Pogoplug support about the same issue. Technician AdamC's response was disable your antivirus and firewall protection (in my case McAfee). That's an unacceptable way to operate and an unacceptable answer. I hope Pogoplug resolves this issue quickly, otherwise this product will be useless to Win 7 users.

Just to clarify, turning off any antivirus software or firewall is just a troubleshooting step that we've found useful to isolate setup issues. If doing so temporarily allows you to connect, then we can continue with details depending on the situation. Sorry this wasn't clear in the support ticket.

One thing we've found to be useful for resolving the network connection error with the Windows drive app is to delete the registry settings for the drive app. Here are the instructions:

Exit Pogoplug Drive App

Open Windows Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Delete) and stop any of these processes if they are running:

- Pogoplug
- ppfs.exe
- ppsync.exe
- dokanmnt.exe

Begin typing "regedit" in the Run or Search box at the Start menu.

Click regedit to start the Registry editor.
Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Expand folder Software

Expand folder Pogoplug

Delete ppfs sub-folder

Restart the Drive App

If that doesn't get you up and running, feel free to contact us at http://support.pogoplug.com/requests/anonymous/new

I know some others in the forums have been having problems as well so, in case it helps, here's at least what I discovered about my problem:

I went to my network and sharing center.
Within this window, my current network connection established, I glanced down about half way (below the "view active networks" section) at the "Change your network settings" section.
The third clickable hypertext option is "Choose Homegroup and Sharing Options" so I clicked it. (It's below "Connect to a network" and above "Trouble shoot problems.")
The second section down on the window that comes up is "Share Media With Devices."
"Stream my pictures, music, and videos to all devices on my network" was unchecked, so I clicked its checkbox.
To be safe I also clicked all the unchecked checkboxes in the "Sharing Libraries and Printers section above, but I think the aforementioned "Stream pictures..." checkbox below it was what probably did the trick.

In retrospect, kind of a simple oversight on my part, so maybe everyone's already way ahead of me on this one, lol. But for whoever it helps, there ya go. ;)
