I'm pretty tech-y, but my new Pogoplug did NOT come with instructions and I have no idea how it works. I've downloaded the software, plugged it all in, and now what? I have two icons on my desktop. I have no idea what they're for. Am I supposed to drag and drop my hard drive onto either of these? One says I have no memory left. The other says I don't have permission (even though all my permissions are read/write and repaired). Am I expected to drag and drop all my folders onto these things in order to get access?? Hardly "instant access." I mean, seriously, a two page instruction booklet isn't asking too much fer chrissakes. I'm a writer, I'll write one up for y'all if it's that "easy." I'd rather not write a negative blog about my experiences with this piece of gear, but I'm pretty much out of patience. Help, please.

You need to physically plug a usb hard drive into the pogoplug. Then it will should show on your desktop as if it was plugged into your computer.

Ok, I think I get it. I plugged in a clone of my drive. THAT's what Generic External is. So now what happens? Does that drive need to stay on all the time in order for me to view my files on the road? Can't I just plug the thing into my computer, or would I need to leave my machine on all the time? What does "Files Shared With Me" mean? Thanks for the response.

axekicker, you don't plug the pogoplug into your computer...that's part of the beauty of the device. You just plug external hard drives or thumb drives into the pogoplug, then you can access the files on those devices from anywhere on any computer. "Files shared with you" are exactly that...if someone else with a Pogoplug has some files that they want you to see, they would show up in that folder. For right now, you can ignore that folder (unless someone has invited you to look at their files). The other one you see (Generic External) is your thumb drive. Any additional drive you plug in will show up in the same spot you see "Generic External".If you want to rename them, you can do so by logging into my.pogoplug.com and selecting "settings" in the upper right hand corner.

Once your drives are attached, you can just drag and drop like you would any other time.

what I would add to JJ response is that you need to plug the pogoplug into your router, then you plug whatever ever drives you want into it, and then you have access to those drives from any computer with an internet connection.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but why would you buy something without doing research into what it is and how you might use it? Then come to this site and post while apparently ignoring all the threads which provide answers to your questions?

Try the link below, I found it prominently displayed next to your post. It reads:

axekicker, if you've read the posts here and checked out the FAQ, you should have a great idea of what Pogoplug can do for you. It provides a similar function to MobileMe iDisk in that you can access your files from multiple computers over the Internet, but takes it a step further by allowing you to essentially have infinite storage as well as keeping your files private, since they aren't uploaded to another server.

In essence, you can have terabytes and terabytes of data shared on all of your computers, seamlessly, with no monthly fees. That's pretty awesome.

Pogoplug also has the My.pogoplug web service which makes it easy to stream audio and video, share pics, etc. There's an Android and iPhone app as well as a BlackBerry beta app if you want to access your stuff on the go.

Got it. What I didn't understand was why Pogoplug renamed my drive as "generic external." That confused me. Otherwise, I think I'm figuring it out. My main beef is that this is nothing a two-page instruction booklet couldn't cover. I don't mind hitting the boards for troubleshooting, but just to get up and running? Did anyone else not get an instruction booklet or is it just me?

Well, I was being facetious. I know what pogoplug CLAIMS it does, I just couldn't get there because my pogoplug did NOT come with any instructions besides the hookup booklet. Is that just me, or is that how it ships? If so, that's annoying. I don't mind hitting the boards to troubleshoot, but not just to get up and running. So far, I think I'm happy with the product, but it annoys the hell out of me that I have to gain a proper understanding of the product's total capabilities by "troubleshooting," or going through a troubleshooting protocol of board discussions and Q&As just to get up and running. It's ridiculous, actually.

Anyway, thanks for all the responses. I think I have it figured out. See my above responses as to why I'm annoyed with the process, not the product itself. Hopefully, the marketing guys will take heed and include some simple instructions so the boards can be reserved for troubleshooting and not for basic set up. I'm willing to write it for product ;-) Basic set up shouldn't be part of a "troubleshooting" process. It just puts the initial product experience in a negative place, IMHO. My ยข2.

This is basically a full featured manual (not to mention the community forums here, as well as the FAQ both here and on Pogoplug's site.) It's linked to prominently from the My.Pogoplug "homepage" in the upper right hand corner.

Personally, I prefer online manuals. They don't waste paper/resources and are kept up to date, where a paper manual can get outdated quickly. Pogoplug has improved *a lot* since it was first released and has added tons of new features, so printing paper "instructions" wouldn't really make sense for them or the consumer.

Cool, I'll take a look. I'm not talking about an in-depth manual, but a quick start guide to the most basic features of the product. At the very least, they should direct first time users to the on-line manual, which I do see the value of.
