No, that's one of the great things about using pogoplug as opposed to the alternatives.

Thanks guys. It seems to be a great buy then. One other question, how is the quality of the streaming videos?

The quality is good, but you have to fully transcode them before you can watch them (which takes a while if you have a large video collection).

There's conflicting info about whether or not there will be a $30 annual fee for those that use the Pogoplug service on the Seagate Freeagent Dockstar.

Woot.com has sold this item a couple of times for $20 (Amazon currently selling it for $30). Woot clearly states that there will never be a Pogoplug service fee on it...while Seagate's own press release indicates $30 annual fee after the first year: http://bit.ly/2NPXrF

Can someone clear up this confusion?

My Pogoplug v1 has been switched over to a $30 annual fee, and my DockStar has always been on it. The pink Pogoplug has free access. I don't know why my Pogoplug v1 was put on a annual plan. Maybe it's because of all the pain and suffering I've caused with OpenPogo. :D

@crimsonredmk - your v1 Pogoplug should not be on any fee whatsoever - check in with support on that; you shouldn't be charged for service on that device ever :)

Okay, but can you clarify the fee issue with the other devices. I have a new v2 Pogoplug and I also bought a few woot! DockStars. I'm anal about avoiding fees, so I'm worried after reading this thread.

v2 Pogoplugs - no fees
DockStar - also fee-free now

Direct reply from Seagate support person to this question

hank you for contacting Seagate Technical Support.

Both sets of information are correct and let me explain what I mean. The pogoplug subscription allows you to create a setting on the dockstar that if you go to the pogoplug website you can access your dockstar from any where in the world not just your home network. Now if you decided you don't want the world wide access you can just cancel the subscription. Even if you cancel the subscription the dockstar will work on your home network without a problem and that doesn't cost anything to use. Only that world wide access portion costs but you do get 1 year free to try and see if you like it that way.

Let me know if this answered your questions.

Regards,
Bradley

The main product site is correct, there are no subscription fees for Dockstar, http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/network_storage/freeagent_dockstar/...

Dockstar..."Delivers built-in award-winning Pogoplug® functionality so you can access and share files anywhere in the world. Simply log in from any web browser for easy access to your files at home—no special software is needed*, no subscription or additional fees required."

Currently, Dockstar subscriptions still appear to expire within a year but we plan to update all Dockstar's before ANY subscriptions expire. Rest assured, Pogoplug will take care of you.

I don't understand. So if Dockstar comes with unlimited plan or 1 year free?

July 20, 2010 7:57 PM

Bradley

When Dockstar was first launched, the purchase included a one year subscription. Seagate and Pogoplug recently revised our agreement and purchase of a Dockstar now includes a lifetime subscription to Pogoplug Service.

this is good to hear

I am looking forward to an easier way to share files between my mac and pc in addition to having access to the files from anywhere with internet access!

I gave a pogoplug to my son last Christmas. Now I get one of my own!
