Hi,

I was just wondering if someone could clarify how pogoplug deals with 2 or more people accessing the same file using the drive app?

What I want to avoid is 2 people opening a shared file and not realising someone else is already editing and therefore creating a conflict?

I assume pogoplug operates like a VPN so I assume that when a 2nd user accesses a file which is already in use it informs the 2nd user that they only have read only permissions - similar to how a windows network works?

Can someone confirm this is the case?

Just to clarify, I am wondering whether using a pogoplug through windows explorer will allow the file to be locked when 1 user is accessing it?

File locking is not an implemented feature - it's something that's on our product backlog but at the moment does not work consistently.

For example, excel seems to do pretty well at creating a temp file when you open it on a Pogoplug enabled drive, which means it is "locked" to the next person who tries to open it, but that isn't the case for all applications.

Actually we've found that locking doesn't work with Excel files either. This seems like a key issue. Where is it on the backlog list and how do we get it moved up?

Dear Jon,
I confirm what CJBruin says.
Even if I see the temp file when I open the excel file, my colleage don't see it.
So, she doesn't know that I am already there.
This is a big problem because when you are in the file and another person enters, you can try saving your file but it won't work because it will stay the same as it was when the 2nd person entered.

I received the following e-mail from Christopher the Support Manager at Pogo.

Regarding the feature request for file locking, I'll bring this up again with the Product lead during my next weekly update but to date this hasn't been a priority. To date Pogoplug's primary purpose has been two fold: simplified local and remote file access and sharing, and localizing "cloud storage". Pogoplug was never intended to be a collaboration server, but again, I will bring this up again to the Product lead.

In the meantime, I do suggest you refresh the Pogoplugged thread with your desire for this; the entire company monitors Pogoplugged.com and if there is sufficient interest, this may be incorporated in a future product.

I'd really like to see the community get behind this feature as it is an important function if the device is going to be used for business. We purchased the unit so we could have a place to share and update files across multiple offices and we've had to move those documents back to internal network drives since file locking doesn't work.

+1

For those who can not afford or do not need the full functionality of a NAS the Pogoplug or Seagate alternatives are great little devices.

I would really like to see some basic things like these be implemented.

Adding this function would certainly helps Pogoplug to earn marketshares with SOHO.
Small companies don't need a NAS and Pogoplug could be the best solution.
