It sounds like you might have shared your whole drive, or a folder above the FAMILY folder in the hierarchy with your friends? This should be easy enough to fix -Unshare with your friends, and reshare only the folders you want them to be able to see. Any subfolder of a shared folder is accessible to all the sharees, so I think that's what you're seeing.
