Hey guys, I’m very interested in this new pogoplug device, or potentially another small NAS like it. I’ve been running an NSLU2 for a while now which I only really use at the moment to drive ftpd-topfield, which is used to network my Topfield PVR. However it’s a little underpowered for what I would like it to be able to do, which is where the pogoplug comes in…

I’ve got a PS3 and I’m really intrigued by the ability to stream from the pogo via DLNA. Now here’s what I would like to do…

1. I have a 500GB Samsung S2 USB hard drive which at the moment just has one large partition in FAT32 format. I understand that to pimp the pogo I need to install optware packages onto an EXT3 partition. What is the easiest way for me to resize my existing FAT32 partition (keeping the 100 or so Gigs I am currently using), and adding the additional EXT3 partition? Also I will be occasionally unplugging this from the pogo and plugging straight into the PS3. Are there any issues with plugging a USB with dual partitions into the PS3? Obviously of course the PS3 will only recognize the FAT32 partition.

2. I will want to install some kind of torrent client (preferably one which works with Magnet links) onto the pogo, which I will want to be able to access remotely and which also needs to default to saving to the FAT32 partition. Is this possible? Also how do I get my magnet links and torrent files from the websites and on to the remotely accessed client?

3. Occasionally I may want to download .MKV files. On my PC I have mkv2vob which I use on any .MKV file to re-multiplex it into a container the PS3 can use. Is there a way to do this on the pogo? Again, I would like to be able to do this remotely if possible.

4. The pogo will also need to have ftpd-topfield running in the background to continue the work of my NSLU2. Apparently from I can tell the package is available and should install.

5. For the remote access, preferably I want to be able to do all this from an Android phone.

So there we have it, quite a list but if the pogo can work with this setup and I can get it all running this will be a supremely beautiful thing. I have access to both Ubuntu and Windows in order to help get all this set up.

So point by point, can anyone out there help with this worthwhile cause? If all this is possible it will just about be my dream set up. And that’s before I start doing other cool things like running my own webserver.

Cheers guys!

I don't actually have my PogoPlug yet (in transit) but from the reading I have done over the past few days I think I can answer most of your questions.

1. The easiest way to partition using ext2 is with a gparted LiveCD (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php)

Just burn the .iso to a disk (Google for instructions if necessary) and boot from that. It has a nice interface for partitioning.

2. The best for the PogoPlug (and DockStar) is Transmission, which is also the most popular as of now for both Linux and Mac.

Instructions for installing OpenPogo which lets you install other apps: http://www.plugapps.com/index.php5?title=OpenPogo:Installing_Base_Package_-_USB

Instructions for installing Transmission:
http://www.plugapps.com/index.php5?title=OpenPogo:Transmission

The instructions on importing a torrent file are in the second link. It is most easily done by logging into a web interface and uploading from there.

3. I doubt it is possible to do remotely (I also use mkv2vob).

4. Not sure.

5. Transmission has a web interface, and there is apparently an Android app available in the Market for PogoPlug itself. Out of curiosity, which phone do you have?

Hope this helps,

I am running transmission on my pogo and it has a great UI for giving it .torrent files. You can set the ul/dl limits and even special limits for times of the day/week. I work from home and have a schedule that limits the d/l bandwidth to 25kb/s from 8am to 6pm. Transmission rocks.

I'm also looking for something almost identical to transmission that will also schedule and QOS normal http/ftp downloads. DLNA seems to work well from the pogo to my PS3. I watch recorded stuff from it all the time.

Thanks for that info hemna! If you do find something for http downloads try to let me know if possible. Also, what do you use for DLNA? Mediatomb or something else?

One last question. When you installed the plugapps thing did you install the whole Linux system or just the apps? Because on plugapps.com it shows two ways to do it.

Thanks,
