I have a lot of videos....  And I mean a LOT.  I'm an avid tv recorder.  I started back in the mid 80's with my vcr and when I got a computer & tv tuner, I continued my recording binge.

I'm putting a lot of the shows & movies into a 1.5tb hard drive that I'm going to plug into my PogoPlug.  When that gets full, I'll buy another and keep copying old stuff off my dvds and VHS tapes.

I've been doing this a while and have lots of formats & bit rates.  As a result, many of the videos are too big to watch 'online'.  (Locally they are fine.  But I'm not always local.)  I need the lower bit rate streaming version the plug does.  (And since the plug doesn't actually 'stream' the other video files, I need the transcoded version for all of them.)

The problem, of course, is the video transcoding the plug does is just too darn slow.  Figure it takes the plug a couple hours per show.  Figure 5,000 shows so far.  You do the math....

Is there any way I can speed the transcoding up?  Do a batch transcoding on my desktop and then transfer them to the plug as part of its own automatic transcoding effort?

I know the plug wasn't really designed for this heavy duty stuff, but since I have it and its way too late to return it, I might as well try to make it work.

I figure the answer is probably "No, there is no way to help the plug transcode faster." but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Eugene, one option is to disable transcoding and then just selectively transcode the movies that you plan on watching (in Settings / Media Settings).

Another option is also to disable transcoding on your Pogoplug and do the transcodes on your computer before you copy them over.

Or just come out with a Pogoplug client that is able to play most common formats. I have Pogoplug on the iPhone 4 and playing video files is basically useless for me since most of my videos are either in AVI or WMV format... I normally just copy the video files to my iPhone and play it using VLCPlayer App or some other player. It would've been nice if the Pogoplug app do the same instead of transcoding forever....

In this, file formats are not the issue. Size & bitrate are.

To address the OP, depending on your model (V2/V3/Video) I would suggest a batch job in Handbrake. The Video does a decent job, but it's still not going to be instantaneous. Even 2 Core 2 Duo wouldn't be. With the Video, I have streamed 300MB tv shows and 1GB movies via the web interface, and on occasion have tried also via my android phone. Unfortunately for me, the limiting factor I can't overlook at the moment with the Video is actually my internet upload speed and not necessarily my Video's capability.
