In 2.1 they turned off telnet.
See http://www.pogoplugged.com/forum/thread/13259/Telnet-from-outside-LAN/#3954
You should be able to turn on SSH via my.pogoplug.com > Settings > Security Settings.
It appears they have disabled telnet by commenting out "#telnetd"in /etc/init.d/rcS. If that is all they did then removing the # would turn it back on. I have not tried it personally yet tho.
You would need to run "mount -o rw,remount /", edit the rcS file and then reboot.

I've been using my first-generation pogoplug (beta tester actually) with good results for the last year. Mostly using it for extensive music collection on single HD. Im no linux expert, but with various helpful postings here I successfully figured out how to get linux apps up and running including firefly and samba. Yay! For some reason I could never ssh into the plug, but I was able to do all this via telnet on both Mac OSX (Terminal) and Windows XP (puTTy). Stock pogoplug features seemed to work fine along side openpogo-provided linux stuff with no problems.
Now, after the recent 2.1 firmware update, none of the openpogo stuff is working (ok after peep over at plugapps forum I see that 'plugapps suck' and is no longer working http://www.pogoplugged.com/forum/thread/13413/Here-s-Why-PlugApps-Sucks-Where...
More importatnly I am NOT able to telnet or ssh into my pogoplug on any machine at home (mac, win7, winxp) , EVEN after checking the box in the new browser-based "security settings" menu. I tried all the usual little things--ejected HD, power cycled pogoplug, checked and unchecked "Allow ssh" box and tried wirelessly, ethernet. What happens is this: When trying via telnet, the terminal/putty program just goes unresponsive (mac) or completely shuts down (windows). When trying SSH, I get error msg: "Network error; connection refused".
NOTE: I have not changed anything on my home router setup/firewall or any other security settings recently and have confirmed the pogoplug IP address over and over. The only thing I know has changed is the pogoplug firmware; prior to this, I had no problem telnetting in.
Yep, as i said in my post, i DID turn SSH on via my.pogoplug.com>settings>security settings, and no dice. keep getting the 'network error connection refused' msg. Any other suggestions?
@shinwhite - if that didn't work pls write into support - they can sort you out
Have you tried to portscan your plug?
E.g.: With Nmap...
the default ssh port should be 22.
