I totally concur with everything you say. Like you I thought I could use it as a cutdown NAS system. Especially as good 'ole windows server 2008 R2 does not allow system image recovery from USB drives, but will if they are 'Networked' . I guess the pogoplug is a linux based cut down computer.
Has anyone managed to see if it can be tweaked to allow once only setting, Fixed IP and Samba style file systems. Sadly like you I cannot install this on my clients site. I am VERY concerned about privacy. It woud not stop sending stuff to the internet. We have only the word of a Chinese based manufacturing company that they only hold the directory information.
Note to the above, it will copy files from your other drives and send them to the internet as well. Is it paranoia? The original idea of sharing personal files over the internet with friends is great, however transparancy of operation would clear my fears.
Is there a way to set the settings in stone and turn off the internet activity?
What we want to use it for is obviously not what it was designed for.
I have a horrible feeling I will have to sell it on ebay.
I have a Seagate Docking Station at home with a 1Tb Seagate External Drive (Own Power Supply) and a Mecer 160Gb External Drive (USB Power). I have actually purchased the unit for a client but tested it on my home network first before I install it for the client. Through my testing I found that:
1) You need to have internet access to enable these drives – even if you load the PogoPlug Software on a PC on the local network.
2) Even if you have internet access to set it up at least I found that every time I remove the 160Gb hard drive (Have not tried with the 1Tb) I have to log into the Pogoplug Web site again to activate the hard drive before it will work – even with Pogo Plug Software installed.
3) This is also the case when we have a power failure.
I checked the manual (which is not really worth anything) and the packaging and advertisements on this product and nowhere does it indicate I need internet access to configure it and use it on a LAN. Was the advertising misleading or am I doing something wrong? My client does not have any internet access at the location where this is to be installed.
Currently I use a windows mapping to the IP address and specific share (Hard Drive) of the docking station to access each Hard Drive as its a lot faster than the default shares provided by PogoPlug.
What will happen if the Free period on PogoPlug expires? I have tried to check the forum threads but could only find bits here and there on this same problem but not this problem exactly. So my apologies if I am duplicating the question in which case please lead me to the correct thread.
Can anyone please assist with this matter however as I really thought this was a great product until I found out the way it’s being configured. Would have made a lot more sense to have a simple web interface on the unit or some software tool (Same as on PogoPlug Web site) to do the same as what the web site does. Obviously I am not interested in sharing any content over the internet at all. I just need a networkable docking station to plug and unplug drives as needed to be shared on my local network and being able to map these drives to a windows drive. Even using the \\FADS1A1A68\Mecer 160Gb type access would also suffice but WITHOUT having to use the internet for configuration of new drives etc.

I saw a user review on newegg.com that gives instructions to use this without pogoplug. Here is what it said: (I haven't tried this so I don't know if it will solve your problem)
Pros: Easy to use. No cluster of cables to hook. Just plug your mini USB drive and it is available on the network.
Cons: Yes, it does not pogoplug. But I found a way to use it without pogoplug. The instructions are as follows:
You can use this as a home network server for windows without signing up with pogoplug or installing any software.
Plug your USB drive into your computer, format it (preferably with NTFS) and create a file on it named .ceid
Using notepad, or your favorite text editor, put these lines in the file
(replacing yoursharename with a name of your own choosing). Note the mode=rw
allows reading and writing.
servicename=yoursharename
xcode.metadata=never
xcode.thumbnail=never
xcode.stream=never
cifs.mode=rw
Plug the usb drive into the Dockstar, and you're all set. The drive will be
available as
\\fadsMMMMMM\yoursharename (where MMMMMM are the last 6 letters and numbers
of the Dockstar's mac address, which is on the label on the bottom).
found the source on a website.
Thanks for your response beny2. I found the file and see its a plain text file. I wonder what is the purpose of the .cedata directory?
When I format the drive I will try creating my own file and see how it goes.
Anyone has an answer to this thread?? (Setting Up Docking Station without Internet Access??).
@Tristan - see beny2's post for a DockStar or a GoFlex Net
Pogoplugs are not designed to be set up without Internet access, so there is no way to set up a Pogoplug without connecting to our service.
Its a pity however that none of the advertising on the packaging or elsewhere indicated this.
