Waiting 4 hours to move a 1 gig file to a hard drive that is 2 feet away from my laptop is ridiculous. Is there a way to have local access to my drives via my LAN connection? I hate having to unplug my drives from the pogoplug ever time I want to add files because it takes forever to re-associate with the pogoplug and I have to re-encode all the previews all over.

I'm not sure how the pogo works exactly but I am assuming that even if we are behind the same router or switch I still have to take a trip out of my network to access my drives.

Not sure if you got the newer firmware yet or not, but it allows you to make Samba shares.

Accessing your Pogoplug on the same router and subnet should tell the Pogoplug to route things locally.

Cue the customary "Contact support at http://......"..

4 hours??? That's crazy! It took me less than 4 hours to transfer my entire photo collection which is over 6 gigs! What speed is your internet connection?

March 19, 2010 11:27 PM

well I just got my pogoplug not even a month ago so i think I have the latest firmware. But if it does route things locally than kick ass. I should have probably tried my Ethernet connection before I posted on here all angry like.

4 hours was the estimate windows gave to transfer the file. I was not about to wait 4 hours so I just plugged the drives in via my eSATA and did my thing.

By now, I'm sure you have the latest firmware also. Yeah...1 gig shouldn't take too long at all. When you drag and drop large files in Windows, it always gives some ridiculous time estimate at first, but once it's gotten a little into the transfer, the time drops significantly.

I'm not 100% certain on this, but I'm pretty sure the speed of your internet also has something to do with how fast files transfer...even though you're on the same router as the Pogoplug. If I'm wrong someone please correct me.

If you are on the same LAN, your data will go direct to your Pogoplug. This works with the older firmware builds too, so if you are seeing slow speeds something else is going on. As a quick test, make sure your computer is connected via ethernet - this will rule out any wi-fi latency issues. Also make sure that you are on the same sub-net - this can get confusing at times if you have multiple routers in your home. If you continue to have problems, please contact support@pogoplug.com and they'll help figure out what's going on.

The protocol we use is actually not SMB/CIFS but rather an optimized WAN protocol so we can provide access both in and out of the home. It has a proximity auto-detect algorithm that automatically routes data directly between the client and Pogoplug whenever possible so that in-home transfers take advantage of gig ethernet.

I just installed the 2.1.1 Firmware update, and would like to know if the firmware update will let me backup/sync my hdd without having to uplug/plug, I have the same issue as Trunomilt. I have a Seagate Freeagent 1.5TB and am using a netgear WGR614. any advise on how to set up the hardware/software would be great.

Thanx

it should work fine. The problem i was having was that I was using a wireless connection on my laptop which created a bottleneck. If you have gigabit from the source of back up to the router than back up to the pogoplug it should be almost as fast as having it plugged in directly via usb2.0. I would like to see however some eSATA support to get rid of that usb2.0 bottle neck.

So again make sure you've got gigabit from source to destination.

How do you create samba shares with the new firmware?

March 29, 2010 9:34 AM

Yes how indeed can you create samba shares? I was under the impression you needed to install either plugApps or openpogo in order to get samba. Ive been struggling to get this working reliably on my v2 for weeks.

Bump

March 30, 2010 1:47 PM

@outlet - you do need either plugapps to get samba - there is no native samba support on the Pogoplug as yet.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what does Samba buy me that I don't already have. When I go to My Computer, I see the 4 drives I have connected to my plug.

One thing I don't like is the drive letters might change, does Samba for example, help with that?

Yes, you could map certain folders of the drive to certain letters. For me i am interested in Samba for more universal access, i.e. not needing to install the pogo driver for local transfers. Also i use XBMC which can connect to smb shares to watch content from the plug on my TV. However, i also like the my.pogoplug.com feature so i can stream to my smartphone while im away from home.

@Pogoskins - our streaming feature was tested (by one of our intrepid betas) with Boxee - very similar to XBMC. You might try enabling streaming on your Pogoplug drive and firing up XBMC - I think it will show up and run

I can verify XBMC was able to stream from my Pogoplug.

XBMC was one of the options I was looking at on my laptop to stream music. I use MediaMonkey and it gets annoying when the plug drives magically change letters after reboot (okay, maybe it's not magic, but still...) so I was looking for alternatives.

I hated XBMC though, in fact I didn't see any software players I liked, hence my comment above about Samba.

I prefer to access my data over a share, I don't usually map network drives. That's my main reason for preference of samba. I also like to access data on other peoples machines and don't want to install software and I prefer samba for multiple file transfers over the web interface.

I just rebooted and my primary and backup drives switched driver letters. I guess it's time to investigate Samba.

@jon.QA Very cool that xbmc and native pogo streaming work so well together. I will have to experiment with this. However, there is just something about samba... It's tried and true, no extra drivers, ability to 'hard map' drives that @davidjames is having issues with, not to mention local access without CE dependence. ( not trying to offend at all here, i am aware that there is local routing built into your software) It just seems to make more sense for me (when i am local) to use samba. However, when i am remote, i feel that CE offers more security, convenience and reliability than opening ports on my router. That is why i chose pogoplug over basic NAS.

I may have already asked this question but i'll try and phrase it a little better. I'm interested in being able to sync and backup both a desk top and 2 laptops to my seagate drive, I already have the latest firmware 2.1, I haven't used active copy yet; when I take a look at active coy somehow it just doesn't look like it will do what I wan't it do.

the second question that I am interested in is; what exactly is samba? I've already seen it on a few threads, but samba never really seems to get cleary defined.

thanks

I can't pronounce on Active Copy because I don't think I understand it either. The Web version seems to be designed to move files between Pogoplug-attached drives, and I'm not sure why you would want to do that.
I have two terabyte drives connected. On one I store music, pictures and videos. I use ActiveCopy to back them, up to the second.

thanks for the info.

August 3, 2010 12:40 PM

The active copy does more than backup things, it looks to see what's changed so only new or modified files are moved. This is more efficient.

August 10, 2010 9:50 AM

So what is the best way to sync files from the pogoplug to your laptop?
